180.000 people visit Mercat de Mercats

The gastronomy and market trade fair Mercat de Mercats (The market of markets) was a
great success on its first edition in Barcelona. More than 180.000 people have visited this
venue during the days 22nd, 23rd and 24th of October.
Every participant - food market traders, peasants, chefs, sommeliers, cellars, organizers for
the children activities and institutions - agree about the success of this festival and qualify
it as a very interesting project that should be reorganized in the future.
The numbers for Mercat de Mercats:
- 3 days full of activities at the Cathedral and Santa Caterina squares
- 180.000 people
- 40.000 food and drinks sold
- 150.000 direct trade from the market stalls
- 20.000 square metres
- 7.000 participants for more than 70 activities at the gastronomy and sommelier’s area
- 600 children for the children activities
- 5 institutions responsible for the trade fair
- More than 400 people have made possible Mercat de Mercats:

32 food market traders from the different markets of Barcelona
24 food market traders from Marseille, Turin and Genoa
72 food market traders for the products with Protected Origin Denomination (POD)

40 cava producers
12 organizers for the children activities
32 students and teachers from the Hostelry School CETT

A lot of people from the Barcelona Market Traders Association, the department of Ciutat
Vella and Environment from the Barcelona Town Hall.
Mercat de Mercats has been the third of the gastronomy festivals and food market festivals inside
the European project MedEmporion, leaded by Barcelona, Turin, Marseille and Genoa - in the
framework of the program Med from the European Market. The objective is to study and
promote market’s role in the Mediterranean area and in the economic, social and urban
development.
One of the great events and one of the main activities in this European project is the organization
of four Market Fairs on each of the leading cities for the Project: last year this trade fair took place
in Marseille, Turin organized it last June and Genoa will be implementing the food market trade
fair in 2011.
Mercat de Mercats is an event promoted by the Barcelona Markets Institute and the Barcelona
Town Hall, and it’s sponsored by the European Union through the program MedEmporion. It’s also
supported by the following institutions: PRODECA - the Department of Agriculture of Catalonia,
Gastroteca - Trade, hand-made products and fashion in Catalonia- Department for Innovation,
Universities and Companies and the Barcelona Trade Area, it also counts with Moritz and Sacyr, as
the main private sponsors. Lots of institutions and official entities have also collaborated with
activities, products or with their effort.
