POSITION OBJECTIVE:
As a member of the waste collection team assist in providing a professional commercial waste
collection service to businesses, schools and organisations. The commercial waste services
offered by Council are to paying customers and a high level of business focus is required to
deliver a service that meets expectations in a commercially driven environment.
To provide a public place litter bin collection service to the communities streets, parks and
reserves. Promote Council’s environmental obligations in the field and ensure public place litter
bin service levels are maintained to community expectations.
Operate within a team environment to work within specific time frames and schedules to complete
commercial and litter waste collection runs safely and efficiently.

The City of Greater Geelong is one of the largest local government areas in Victoria. The City

The City has an annual budget of $229 million and employs over 2000 staff. It also utilises a large

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Display a positive personal contribution in undertaking waste collection services consistent
with Award and job requirements.
2. Ensure the safe and efficient collection of public place litter bins and commercial waste bins.
3. Follow all reasonable directions given by the Team Leader – Driver and management in
accordance with operational requirements.
4. Complete daily commercial and public place litter bin waste collections as per schedule
allocated by management. Work effectively and efficiently in accordance with Council’s
standards and requirements as directed.
5. Display a positive personal contribution in undertaking daily duties and in assisting the Waste
Unit in providing a customer focused service.
6. As required, to undertake the duties of the Team Leader – Driver as per operational
requirements and roster.
7. Undertaking additional duties to assist team members when required due to operational
requirements.
8. Operating and maintaining plant and equipment in an effective and efficient manner and in
compliance with relevant laws/regulations, codes of practice and City Services directives.
9. Work within all Council health and safety policies promoting the use of relevant personal safety
equipment provided.
10. Ensure that the vehicle is driven in accordance with the State of Victoria road laws/regulations.
11. The incumbent will comply with the Zero Blood alcohol tolerance.
12. Adherence to all Council’s policies and procedures as relevant to this position.
13. Carry out other duties as deemed reasonable and appropriate to the role as directed from time
to time.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA:
1. General experience in the waste collection industry.
2. Demonstrated ability to interact courteously and professionally with the public, Council’s
customers and team members.
3. Good verbal and written communication abilities supported by sound numeracy skills.
4. Adapt to demands on service levels at short notice and manage increased work loads over
peak periods.
5. A medium to heavy rigid truck licence is essential and must be held by the incumbent.
6. Ability to work positively in a team environment.
7. Ability to cope with a physically demanding role and perform manual work including lifting of
weights in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines.
8. Ability to submit accurate documentation in the form of self repairs, minor reports, proforma’s
and timesheets.
9. Flexibility to work an early morning shift (4.30am – 1.30pm) including regular weekend and
public holiday overtime in accordance with staff roster.
10. All candidates should display integrity, responsibility, respect for others and the ability to be
innovative.
Desirable:
1. Extensive knowledge of streets, parks and reserves within the Geelong municipality.
ACCOUNTABILITY AND EXTENT OF AUTHORITY:

The incumbent is responsible for the safe collection of public litter bins and commercial waste
in a manner that brings credit to Council and for the care, safety and minor maintenance of
plant, equipment and assets used in the daily operations.

The incumbent is responsible for the quality of work produced.

Work is performed under general supervision.

The incumbent is required to undertake the duties of Team Leader – Driver when required due
to operational requirements and roster.

Ensure that Occupational Health and Safety requirements are adhered to for the protection of
our staff, internal and external customers.
JUDGEMENT AND DECISION MAKING:

The incumbent must be able to apply any training that they have received.

Personal judgement is exercised in delivering a service to the community and business which
reflects professionalism in line with company expectations.

The incumbent is required to assess waste collection sites to identify any environmental
hazards which may impact on the community.
SPECIALIST SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

Knowledge of the capabilities combined with operational competency in waste collection
vehicle operations.

Knowledge of relevant road law and road sign regulations.

Ability to work within a heavy traffic environment in accordance with safe working procedures.

Ability to work within high volume pedestrian areas in accordance with safe working
procedures.

Ability to perform manual work on a daily basis, including lifting of weights in accordance with
Occupational Health and Safety guidelines.

Skill and judgment to effectively operate plant with due safety and in accordance with the
capacity of the plant.

Understanding of, and ability to perform, Plant Maintenance tasks at all times.

Ability to have an awareness of overhead services and structures.
MANAGEMENT SKILLS:

Ability to manage time and meet priorities established for allocated work.

Demonstrated ability to display initiative and work with minimal supervision.

Liaise in a professional manner with team members, contractors and external customers.
INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

Ability to contribute to workplace improvement programs and team discussions.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

A current Victorian medium truck licence required as a minimum.

Ability to competently operate waste collection vehicles is desirable.
It is desirable that the following skills, qualifications, licences, accreditations are held by the
applicant:




Experience in waste industry.
Manual Handling training.
Hazardous substance training.
Safe Operation Procedure training.
SPECIFIC HEALTH AND SAFETY REQUIREMENTS:

A pre-employment medical examination may be required.

Participate, where required, in the reporting of health, safety and wellbeing issues.


Ability to cope with a physically demanding role and perform manual work including lifting of
weights in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Guidelines.
Demanding deadlines.

Long / short distance travel between sites as necessary.

Dealing with difficult clients and situations.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS:
The nature of this position requires the incumbent to work an early morning shift (4.30am –
1.30pm) including regular weekend and public holiday overtime in accordance with a staff roster.
The practical start will be the Anakie Rd Operations Centre, Belmont Depot or Drysdale Depot.
Employment is subject to the presentation of documentary evidence of the right to work in
Australia.
A National Police Records check may be required throughout your employment with Council.
Current Victorian Drivers Licence is essential where the need to drive a Council vehicle is
required.

Employment may be subject to a three-month probationary period (please note that following
