STUDENT STAFF MEMBER CONFIDENTIALITY STATEMENT
Confidentiality is an important part of being a student staff member. The student staff member
will be entrusted with information, both organizational and personal, and will be expected to keep
that information within the confines of professionalism. The student staff member shall maintain
professional standards of confidentiality in all dealings with students and staff. For example, the
student staff member will not discuss a disciplinary, academic, or personal problem with other
student staff members unless the information is relevant to job responsibilities and in the best
interest of the student(s) involved. In no case shall the student staff member impart personal
information in a location or manner that allows other persons to overhear. This prohibition
against public comments includes all “evaluative” comments relevant to any student, student
staff, or staff member.
The student staff member should never promise a student complete confidentiality in dealing with
problems or situations. In situations where there may be a threat to someone’s health or safety,
the student staff member must seek assistance of professional staff for referral or resource
information. The student staff member may also be asked to disclose information to a
professional staff member for other appropriate professional reasons, and is expected to do so.
As part of the student staff position, the student staff member may be part of search or interview
committees for positions of employment. The student staff member must understand that all
information regarding these searches is confidential and is not to be discussed or shared outside
of the proceedings of the processes. The student staff member must understand that to do so
represents a risk to the search, to his/her continued employment, and to the institution. The
student staff member must understand that failure to maintain the confidentiality of the process
will result in disciplinary action, which may include termination of employment.

Member Confidentiality Statement. I understand that I represent the Division of Student Services
(Counseling Center, Health Services, Campus Recreation, Residence Life, Security, and Student
Activities), the University, and myself and as such will be a positive representative.
