Geography of The Nile

The Nile River is the world’s largest river in the world. It is found in Egypt and is surrounded by
deserts, so it was very important to the survival of the people of Ancient Egypt.

It flows South to north.

It empties into the Meditteranean Sea.

The tip of the Nile River spreads out to form a marshy
area that is shaped like a triangle called the _____Nile___________ _____Delta_____________.

The flooding creates rich soil that is great for farming. Yearly is flooding is called=indundation

Egypt is a country located on the continent of Africa. (right hand corner)
List 3 “gifts” the Nile gave the people of Ancient Egypt:
1. Rich soil, or silt for farming
2. Transportation for trade
3. Food-hunting and fishing

Indundation means the yearly flooding.
Lower Egypt vs. Upper Egypt

The phrases refer to the elevation(height) of the land.

___Upper________Egypt is in the south and ______Lower_____________ Egypt is in the north

The Nile River flows north because the higher land is in Upper Egypt. It flows north into the
Mediterranean Sea.
Pharaohs



Pharaoh means king or ruler.
Believed to get power from the gods; believed they were part god
Pharoahs were buried in pyramids
 A dynasty is a when rulers are all part of the same family. When a pharaoh dies, the son takes
over and so on….until they are gone or taken over.
 Why were pyramids built for the pharaohs? (see Mummification/afterlife)

Mummification/Afterlife

Egyptians believed in afterlife. If you led a good life that meant that you would go into
the afterlife.

Egyptians believed that the ka(the spirit) left the body and then needed to come back
and find their old body. So they mummified, or preserved the dead body so the ka could
find it.

Egyptians believed in many gods(polytheistic). If you made the gods unhappy, bad
fortune would come to you.
Egyptian Writing

Hieroglyphics= symbols for words.

The Egyptians wrote on papyrus

Scribes=people that could read or write

Wrote down what they believed(stories, names, etc).

Cartouche=name plate of rulers.
Social Classes- Know the order of the social class pyramid:
Pharaoh, Vizier, Nobles and Priests, Scribes and Soldiers, Merchants and Craftsman , Farmers and Slaves
