During the predoctoral training period, which leads up to the predoctoral examination, the candidate’s
academic competence and research aptitude in the legal or in the criminological field will be developed
and assessed. While completing predoctoral training, doctoral applicants can enrol as a predoctoral
student.
In consultation with the chief supervisor and with the applicant, the doctoral committee will design a
predoctoral training programme. This programme is put in writing and added to the applicant’s file.

PREDOCTORAL EXAMINATION
The purpose of the predoctoral examination is to assess whether the applicant is capable of
completing a PhD within a four-year period.
In consultation with the chief supervisor and the doctoral applicant, the doctoral committee decides on
the content of the predoctoral examination. This may consist of the requirement to obtain a certificate
or credit for courses, seminars or internships completed during the predoctoral training period. The
content of the predoctoral examination is put in writing and added to the applicant’s file. (Art. 24,
faculty doctoral regulations).
