EDUCATION FOR PARENTING
Are you finding it challenging to raise your children? Do you want to reduce
children’s problem behavior? Do you want strong, healthy relationships with
your children, with all the support, discipline skills and information you could
have for living out your calling from God?
Explore some real solutions in this Education for Parenting workshop.
We will address some practical strategies, proven to work, about why, when and how
to use discipline strategies. Come join us to learn these effective methods and practice
them, too. We use presentations, videos and practice opportunities in every session.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel + St. Benedicta Grammar School ,
PLACE:
285 Clove Road, Staten Island, N.Y. 10310 (Park in the lot adjacent to the
school; enter lot from Clove Road. Use the main entrance to the school.)

Tuesdays, October 6, 13, 20, 27, November 3, 10, 17
TIME:
7:00-9:00 PM
COST:
$30 covers one or both parents, and includes a book and workbook.

This workshop, which originates from Father Flanagan’s Girls and Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska, is being offered in
conjunction with the Archdiocesan Family Life + Respect Life Office. The presenter will be Sue DiSisto, Education for

Common Sense Parenting is a
6-session workshop for parents of children ages 6-16
 Mothers, fathers, foster parents, grandparents, teachers, nannies or daycare
workers – anyone participating in raising children would enjoy this program
 Explore discipline strategies that will make family life more enjoyable
 Learn real solutions to everyday challenges of getting children to listen and do
what they are supposed to do

COMMON SENSE PARENTING PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
 SESSION 1: How parents are really teachers
1. The difference between discipline and punishment
2. Importance of clear messages
3. Consequences: Using natural consequences, both positive and
negative, to help shape behavior
4. Explanation of workshop term: “child-oriented reason” – giving
children reasons to do or not do something according to their age level
 SESSION 2: Skill of using “Effective Praise” – noticing the behavior that
you want to see in your child, and reinforcing it
 SESSION 3: Skill of “Preventive Teaching” – teaching your child how to
handle him/herself in situations that arise
 SESSION 4: Skill of “Corrective Teaching” – stopping behavior that is
not correct, giving a consequence, and teaching correct behavior
 SESSION 5: Skill of “Teaching Self-Control” – How to stay calm; how to
teach your child to stay calm
 SESSION 6: Social Skills - putting it all together (family meetings, etc.)
