a. Description.
This work includes all labor, materials, and equipment necessary for the excavation and offsite
disposal of all materials necessary for the construction of the box culvert bridge to the limits as
shown on the Plans.
Reference to sections shall be in accordance with the numbered section of the “2012 Standard
Specifications for Construction” issued by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
b. Materials.
Materials shall be in accordance with Section 206.
c. Construction.
The construction methods shall be in accordance with Section 206.03.
d. Measurement and Payment.
The completed work as measured for FOUNDATION EXCAVATION will be paid for at the
contract unit prices for the following contract pay items:

Excavation, Fdn, RCOC …………………….………..………………………….…..… Cubic Yard
Excavation, Fdn, RCOC will be measured by cubic yard which will be based on Plan quantities.
Payment of this item shall be payment in full for all costs associated with furnishing and
installing “Excavation, Fdn, RCOC.”
Since unstable soils have a tendency to expand once excavated, the method for determining
the volume of excavated material removed and disposed offsite shall be as follows:
1. After the Contractor excavates to final culvert bedding grade, the Contractor shall
perform a topographical survey of the area and compare with the Owner’s preconstruction topographical survey.
2. The Contractor shall be paid for the volume difference between the pre-construction
topographic survey and the Contractor’s excavation topographic survey.
3. The following items will not be measured and paid for separately and will include the
furnishing of all labor, materials, and equipment as necessary to complete this work, and
are included in the bid item “Excavation, Fdn, RCOC”:
4. Furnishing of all labor, equipment, and materials necessary to excavate to final culvert
bedding grade as indicated on the Plans.
5. Contractor shall perform an excavated topographic survey and provide the Engineer with
results.

6. Contractor shall provide volume calculations that clearly indicates the NET volume of
material removed and disposed offsite for the Engineer’s approval.
