Sarasota County Public Works Situation Report
Current Situation
The following actions have transpired in response to mitigation efforts for effects of Tropical
Storm Debby:
Monday, June 25, 2012
 Bridges
 The US Coast Guard has ordered all movable bridges locked down to allow
vehicular crossings and limiting vessel traffic due to an opening. This order is
in effect from Tampa to Englewood until further notice. Bridges will not open
unless a vessel is in distress.

 Damage Assessment

Shoreline
 Conducted for Casey and Siesta Keys. Manasota Key assessment in progress.
 Moderate (5-10 ft) to severe (10-15 ft) dune/beach erosion throughout Casey
Key due to the combined effects of high wave energy and high tide.
 Dune vegetation has been washed out.
 Structural damage to decks and dune walkovers has also been observed.
 Several inches to a foot height of water have been documented on Beach Road.
 Most of the Siesta Key public beach was covered by sea water.

Park and Beach Sites
 Beaches in general have experienced a degree of erosion.
 The road to North Jetty requires regrading.
 A few trees are down in Parks.
 Vegetation clean up is needed in many areas.
 Some recycling receptacles/trash can holders have been damaged.
 A few signs are down.
 Docks are still under water and will be assessed once water has subsided.

Additional Discussion: Staff continues to monitor river water levels and the Celery Fields.
Adjustments are made as necessary. Crews continue to mitigate the effects of fresh and tidal waters and
wind damage.
