PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Donor Liaison Co-ordinator will provide support for both exisiting and new renal patients who are
eligible for transplantation with a primary focus on increasing the number of people who would be willing
to become living donors. Donor liaison coordination will also include education of potential donors as well
as support of their timely assessment as dictated by the needs of the SDHB’s Renal Service.
This Donor Liaison Co-ordinator will work collaboratively with health professionals and the wider multidisciplinary team throughout the SDHB in a way that is consistent with the Organisation’s vision and values.
This way of working will ultimately benefit all our patients and communities.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
Essential criteria
 Must be, or be willing to complete the training to become, a Certified Clinical Transplant
Coordinator (CCTC - American Board for Transplant Certification)
 A high level of interpersonal and communication skills
 Proven experience and expertise dealing with ethical and clinical problems
 Proven ability to work unsupervised
 Proven understanding of confidentiality in the healthcare system
 Proven ability to develop and maintain education and information programmes for patients, their
families/whanau and the wider public

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
Professional requirements
 Must be, or be willing to complete the training to become, a Certified Clinical Transplant Coordinator

Must hold a current annual practicing certificate for your scope of practice as directed by the relevant
professional body and the HPCA (as appropriate)

Must havecurrent registration with and participation in an accredited professional development
programme (as appropriate)
Role specific requirements
 To ensure all patients on the renal transplant waiting list meet the clinical criteria for transplantation
 To organise, clinically co-ordinate, attend and provide assessment outcomes for the transplant
surgeon’s clinics
 To ensure patients remain connected to the healthcare system according to the protocols of the
treatment regimen
 To manage and direct enquiries from patients about the renal transplant process, ensuring up-to-date
information is provided thereby facilitating timely assessment
 To be an advocate for the success and growth of the renal transplant programme in order to increase
the conversion rate of potential donors into actual donors
 To ensure that all renal transplant protocols and educational material is current and accurate
 To receive all enquiries relating to living donations and to assist with the living donor assessment
process
 To co-ordinate and facilitate a timely and efficient pathway for those who seek to progress to
assessment as a living kidney donor
 To ensure that all planning and contingency arrangements are made and performed to facilitate successful
recipient and donor surgery
 To meet the psychosocial needs of both patients and donors
 To co-ordinate the multi-disciplinary transplant team meetings ensuring that all decisions are disseminated
to the South Island Transplant Group in a timely manner
 To co-ordinate all post-surgery collow-up clinic appointments, ensuring that donors’results are reviewed
one year after donation
