The LSPI High School Summer Program Specifics
LSPI is accepting current sophomores and juniors.
Accepted students will attend four weeks of Summer Program Sessions.
Sessions will be held:
July 13, 2008 -August 7, 2008
Monday-Thursday 8:30am-4:00pm, Friday 8:30am-1am1
The LSPI High School Summer Program is free to all accepted students.
Limited transportation will be available.
The High School Law School Preparation Institute (LSPI) is designed to:

Interest students in law school and the legal profession.

Teach students what to expect of college and law school.

Develop students’ analytical and critical thinking skills.

Help students formulate a solid plan for becoming an attractive law school
candidate.

Improve students’ writing and public speaking skills.
The Curriculum consists of:

Learning formal logic concepts and logic exercises aimed at developing analytical
skills.

Learning how to analyze and brief legal cases drawn from a text utilized by first
year law students.

Preparing and presenting an argument for a local judge with help from Law School
Preparation Institute graduates.

Meeting various guest speakers including local attorneys and judges, law school
students, and law school admission officers.

Leadership training and development of professional skills.

contacted by UTEP Summer Program Staff to set up a time and date.

Application Essay:
Write a 500 word essay in response to the following.
In the landmark case of Tinker v. Des Moines, students planned to wear black armbands
to protest the Vietnam war. Fearing it would create a disturbance in school, administrators
prohibited the armbands. In arriving at its decision, the Supreme Court stated that neither
"students nor teachers shed their constitutional rights at the schoolhouse gate."
In an essay of 500 words or less, comment on this statement in terms of balancing the
need to maintain order in K-12 schools versus students' first amendment rights.
