GEOLOGY SQUEEZE BOX
Vocabulary:
1. Transgression: The advancing of the ocean onto the land due to a rise in sea level. Causes
deposition of sand first followed by clay.
2. Regression: The retreat of the ocean from land due to falling sea levels. Causes deposition of
clay first followed by sand.
3. Law of crosscutting relationships: A geologic feature which cuts another is the younger of the
two features.
4. Law of super position: Layers are deposited in a time sequence, with the oldest on the bottom
and the youngest on the top.
Tasks:
FIGURE 1
1. Go back to your drawing and label each layer to include the following:
a. Age of rock in relation to other layers. (1-5, where 1 is the oldest rock)
b. Type of rock (sandstone, shale, or limestone)
c. Type of sediment (sand, clay, or diatoms)
d. If the ocean was in a period of transgression, or regression when the layer was
deposited.
FIGURE 2
1. Go back to your drawing and label each of following:
e. Draw lines showing the locations of all faults.
f. Label each fault as a normal, reverse, or strike-slip fault.
g. Draw lines showing the axis of all anticlines or synclines.
h. Label each axis as an anticline, or syncline.
Questions:
1. What force was acting on the layers of rock in the Geology Squeeze Box model?
2. What tectonic plate boundary would be associated with the force described above?
