Program: 4 January – 22 January 2016
The Surf Coast Shire Vacation Care Program in 2016 is exploring and investigating: “What is our
local/community culture within the Surf Coast Shire”.
The theme for this program is “Summer all over the world”. We are going to explore all kinds of activities from
many different countries and regions around the world. We have also collated all of the children’s ideas,
thoughts and their favourite activities to help create the program.
Please read the detailed information on the following pages about the variety of excursions and in-house activities
which are offered in this program.
PLEASE NOTE: On extreme weather or fire danger days (code red), that some in-house activities and excursions may
need to be cancelled for the safety of the children and educators.

Program Information – 4 January – 8 January 2016 (5-12 Years Old)
Monday 4th January 2016 - In House Activities – WELCOME TO ITALY
We celebrate the New Year by giving our nails a makeover in Ellie’s Nail Salon, and for those of us who feel
creative there will be a chance to make some Salt Dough sculptures. In the kitchen we are going to visit Italy
today and produce some Mini Pizzas and there is lots to do outside.

Tuesday 5th January 2016 – In House Activities – SUN, SHADE AND SCONES IN ENGLAND
Emily will be in today with two activities using light and shade. She will help us to create Giant Sun Weavings and
later on Shadow Jars. Meanwhile we are celebrating England today by playing a jolly game of cricket and
producing yummy Lemonade Scones with Jam for afternoon tea.

Wednesday 6th January 2016 – In House Activities – GLOBETROTTING TO THE USA
Today we will be visiting the United States with a Basketball Clinic in the morning and good old fashioned
Chocolate Chip Cookies from the Vacation Care cooking team for afternoon tea. We are also going to try our
hand at sewing some bags or dinosaurs. There are lots of bits and pieces on the craft tables to decorate your
creation to make it your own.

Thursday 7th January 2016 - In House Activities – FUN IN THE TROPICS
Emily is back today with two activities planned, Rainbow Wind Spirals and Beaded Hounds. We will be chilling
out with the tropical flavours of our Grape and Banana Parfaits to enjoy after we have finished our Team
Challenge. Later on you can wind down in the movie room with the Movie of the Day.

Friday 8th January 2016 - In House Activities
– ASIAN HOLIDAY
Today has an Asian theme with the main activity being Tie Dyeing. You will need to bring a T-Shirt from home to
transform with colour using the Tie Dye technique. In the kitchen today we will produce delicious Rice Paper Rolls
and the rest of the day will be up to you with Free Choice Friday.

Program Information – 11 January – 15 January 2016 (5-12 years old)
Monday 11th January 2016 - In House Activities - GREECE IS THE WORD
This year is an Olympic year, and Greece is the home of the Olympics so therefore today is Mini Olympic Day!
We will be making our own gold medals, Olympic wreaths and Olympic torches and learning about Greek gods
and goddesses. Our budding chefs will be whipping up tangy Tzatziki dip for us to cool down after all that activity.

Tuesday 12th January 2016 - In House Activities – GINGERBREAD AND SNOWDROPS IN GERMANY
Emily is back! Today her activities are Sponge Cakes and Snow Drops which both sound very interesting. We
are also hoping to discover the next Boris Becker during our Tennis Clinic and will be cooking up a storm with
Gingerbread Men in the kitchen.

Wednesday 13TH January 2016 - In House Activities – BACK IN THE USA
We are going back to the USA today with a baseball clinic for all of us, while later on a special guest from
Bunnings is going to wow us with a mystery activity. Mac and Cheese will be produced by the kitchen team today
for a taste of America and there are lots of patterns and designs to create using Hama beads.

Thursday 14TH January 2016 - In House Activities – KIA ORA NEW ZEALAND
Today Emily is going to help you to create a Shell Wind Chime or perhaps you might prefer to make Paper Beads.
Why not do both? Also, we are all going to participate in a netball clinic and then tuck into a refreshing Kiwi Fruit
Salad freshly prepared in the Vacation Care kitchen. If you need a rest, there are plenty of board and card games
to play.

Friday 15th January 2016 - In House Activities – LET’S TAKE OFF WITH PAPER PLANES
Australia takes centre stage today as we all revisit our old stomping ground, Surfcoast Sport and Recreation
Centre. The children will be driven down to the centre in two community buses that seat 10 children and 2 staff at
around 11am to watch Paper Planes on the big screen while we tuck into some popcorn produced by our junior
chefs. The children will be we are going to re-create some scenes from the movie with our very own paper plane
competition before heading back to Surfcoast Secondary College at around 4pm.

Program Information – 18 January – 22 January 2016 (5-12 years old)
Monday 18th January 2016 - In House Activities – TOP OF THE MORNING TO YOU ALL!
Today our activities come from the land of shamrocks, Ireland. We will be cooking some lovely Irish Soda Bread
for afternoon tea, and producing Potato Play Dough for our sculpture competition. If there’s any time left, why not
explore the possibilities in the construction room, or check out our board games.

Tuesday 19th January 2016 - In House Activities – EXOTIC INDIA
Emily is back today with two activities for you to try with Kumihimo Bands and Fancy Fish. Meanwhile everyone
will have some fun with our cricket clinic, and Curry Puffs are the treat on the afternoon snack menu. We promise
not to make them too hot!

Wednesday 20th January 2016 - In House Activities – LET’S VISIT SOUTH AMERICA
Our activities today should give us a small taste of South America with a soccer clinic and another visit from
Bunnings with something mysterious up their sleeve! Our kitchen whizz kids are going to make some wonderful
Burritos for later in the afternoon and there might still be time to challenge your friends on the fusbal table.

Thursday 21st January 2016 - In House Activities – ALOHA HAWAII
Kelsey will be in today to teach us how to be better singers, and Emily is going to help us create a Beach Diorama
and also some beautiful jewellery. Some very refreshing Tropical Fruit Skewers is on the menu for the afternoon
and show us your surfing moves on our skooters and skateboards.

Friday 22nd January 2016 – All Day Excursion – THE UNIVERSE
Our excursion for this program is to Scienceworks in Melbourne. We will travel via a chartered coach leaving the
Surf Coast Secondary college at 9am that will seat 50 children and 7 staff. Scienceworks makes learning about
science and technology a fun, interactive adventure and presents science and technology in unexpected and
involving ways. At 11am we will enter the Planetarium for a show on the solar system. We will have lunch and
continue on exploring. Hands-on participation is encouraged and live demonstrations, shows, guided tours and
special activities are a feature. The exhibitions and activities change regularly so even if you’ve been before it’s
always different. We will leave Scienceworks at 3:30pm and should arrive back to Torquay at 5pm.

BIG DAY OUT PROGRAM – (9-12 years old)
Tuesday 12th January 2016 - All day excursion – ADVENTURE PARK HERE WE COME!
Today we will take two community buses (with a max of 20 children and 4 staff) we venture to Wallington to visit
Victoria’s biggest theme park with water slides, Bonito’s water play area, pools and paddle boats to name just a
few of the attractions at Adventure Park. The children and educators will depart Surf Coast Secondary College via
community bus at 9.30 am and after lunch and a splashing good time, the bus will leave the Adventure Park and
will return at approximately 4.30 pm.

conditions. Children will need to bring a sun hat, sunscreen, swim wear, towel, lunch, extra snacks and a water

Tuesday 19th January 2016 - All day excursion – KOALAS AND WATER SLIDES
Today we will take two community buses (with a max of 20 children and 4 staff) At 9.30 am the children and
educators are heading to Barwon Heads on the community bus to visit Jirrahlinga Koala and Wildlife Sanctuary
where the keepers are only too happy to pass on their skills and knowledge about Australia’s unique wildlife. We
will be having our snack on arrival, and lunch just before we board the bus again to make our way to Splashdown
for a swim and a play on the water slides. The bus should return to Vacation Care at approximately 4.30 pm.

conditions. Children will need to bring a sun hat, sunscreen, swim wear, towel, lunch, extra snack and a water bottle.

Important Information for Vacation Care 2016
Cost of Program





The daily fee for vacation care is $54 per day.
Additional cost for excursions is $32 per child per day.
CCB is available for eligible families.
Once vacation care begins, all absentees will incur an absence fee with CCB applied.
Invoices will be sent to families after vacation care period is completed.
Booking Information










Children must be between the ages of 5 and 12 years old and enrolled in a primary school program
Maximum enrolments per day is 70 children.
Maximum enrolments for the BIG DAY OUT (children 9 -12 years) is 20 children.
Priority will be given to parents who are living, working, training or studying in Surf Coast Shire.
Bookings can only be made by families if their account is at a zero balance (no outstanding fees owing).
Collect enrolment form and booking form from Torquay Children’s Hub, Sport and Recreation Centre, Surf Coast
Shire offices or from the Surf Coast Shire website.
Completed enrolment forms can be dropped off to the Torquay Children’s Hub reception or scanned and emailed to
vacationcare@surfcoast.vic.gov.au
A 2016 Enrolment and Booking Form must be fully completed before processing.
Families will receive a phone call for confirmation of care requested.
All booking forms are to be completed and returned to Surf Coast Shire Council by .
Changes and Cancellations








Additional changes to original booking must be in writing to vacationcare@surfcoast.vic.gov.au
Additional charges may apply for bookings made after .
Cancellations require seven days notice, or the full fee will apply.
If medical certificate is presented, families accessing CCB will only be charged the discounted rate.
Program details may change due to inclement weather and any unforeseen circumstances.
Excursions will be cancelled on Code Red Day if the excursion is entering a high risk area.
If a Code Red Day is declared for Torquay, the program will be closed for the day. No fee will be charged for the
day.
Refunds are not available for changes or cancellations made after (unless 7 days notice is given).
Payment



Payment is due after the end of the program.
You are able to pay via internet, phone or in person at the council office. Method of payment includes BPay, Visa
card, Eftpos, cheque or cash. No fees will be taken at the Sport and Recreation Centre or the Torquay Children’s
Hub.
On receiving your bill you will have 30 days to pay. Outstanding fees from previous programs must be paid in full. A
late fee will apply to outstanding balance of 11.5%.
Other




Staff ratios are 1:15 as per Education and Care Services National Regulations. Council adopts a 1:10 ratio for
excursions (unless otherwise stated).
Children are able to bring personal items such as skate boards, scooters, iPods, iPads, etc. These will be at your
own risk. Surf Coast Shire will take no responsibility for lost, broken or stolen items.
All excursions risk assessments are available from the service.

What Your Child Needs to Bring Each Day





Safe and supportive footwear (no thongs, crocks or open-toed shoes will be accepted).
A packed healthy lunch, snacks and refillable water bottle (no nut products).
Appropriate clothing, no sleeveless tops.
Change of clothes.
Sunhats are required (Sunsmart Broad brimmed hats - no caps).
