9th Grade Summer Reading Assignment
2015-2016
Skill List –
- Understanding the ways an author gives information about characters and setting
- Making inferences about the text to gain understanding of characters
Grade Level Belief Statement –
- Through summer reading, the 9th grade students will be able to recognize different ways
the author develops a character because understanding characters is essential to
understanding the text.
Assignment –
- After reading ONE fiction book chosen from the list provided, create a résumé from the
perspective of one character from the story to a college you feel best suited for him/her.
Fill in the fields of the résumé with information that makes sense for the chosen
character. If information (such as their address) is stated directly in the text you should
use that, but for most fields on the résumé, you will have to be creative and make
inferences. Stay true to the character’s personality as well as events from the story.
Attached to your résumé you must include pages with explanations for information
included in each field. These explanations should explain your reasoning in complete
sentences, making direct references to the text for support. See attached model as an
example.
o The example gives some of the appropriate fields for résumés; however, it is only
an example and yours should have unique formatting. Look at sample résumés
online to get ideas on how to organize your résumé.
- Include a cover sheet following the format shown in the example. (The cover sheet is an
example only. You should replace the information with your own.)
How you will be assessed–
- Completion of all parts of the assignment including: Cover sheet, résumé and
explanations.
- Creativity, quality, originality and plausibility of reasoning
