Description of MFL Department
There are 10 teachers working within the MFL department. The three subject
departments of French, German and Spanish have Heads of Department for each
language, and these areas are overseen by the Head of Modern Foreign Languages.
We are also fortunate in having French, German and Spanish language assistants
with their own teaching rooms and a dedicated Language Resources Assistant.
French is currently taught from Year 7, with German or Spanish introduced in Year 8.
Foreign languages become part of the option choices for boys in Year 10. Though all
boys must choose a foreign language at GCSE, a number of talented linguists take
two.
The MFL Department is housed in its own dedicated building, comprising of eight
classrooms and two recently modernised digital language suites. All our classrooms
have projectors and wi-fi access to the school network. All junior students have
tablets and digital resources are used extensively in the delivery of the curriculum.
The MFL Department achieves consistently excellent results at both GCSE and A
level and in recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of boys
who have opted to continue with the subject in the Sixth Form, not to mention a
concomitant increasing number of our students reading languages at university level.
In the current academic year, there are over 60 boys studying languages in the Sixth
Form.
As a department we offer a wide range of activities, trips and homestays across all
three languages. MFL teachers are encouraged to participate in these curriculum
visits, whilst additional curriculum support is offered to boys of all ages and abilities
through the various language clinics run by the department at lunchtimes.

department. The successful candidate will be able to teach up to and including A
level in one language and should be able to teach at least to GCSE level in the other
