HOW TO REGISTER YOUR VEHICLE UNDER THE “SHAPE” SYSTEM
CASE 2:
Buying a NEW vehicle with a 705 label in Belgium (VAT exempt)

Do you intend to buy a Tax-Free vehicle, .
1.
Prior to registration, you must obtain from the dealer the original bill of sale (invoice), else Pro Forma,
with following information:
a. Dealer’s name, address and VAT number
b. Purchaser’s full name (the name of the entitled person in whose name the vehicle will be registered)
c. The number of the bill of sale
d. The date
e. Make, type and chassis number of the vehicle
f. The price (VAT exclusive) and
g. The words “EXEMPTION DE LA TVA – ARTICLE 42 ALINEA 3 DU CODE” or
“VRIJGESTELD VAN BTW – ARTIKEL 42 ALINEA 3 VAN DE CODE”

To register a vehicle, you are required to present the following documents to the CEP-Registration
Office (RGN) (2)
a.
SHAPE ID card (only SHAPE members are entitled to tax exemption. Family members are not entitled to
register a vehicle under the SHAPE system)
b.
A valid national driving license. SHAPE driving license will be issued to you upon production of a valid
driving license or valid military driving license for assigned military or civilian personnel. (Holders of a
European driving license will NOT be issued a SHAPE driving license). CA and US personnel must pass
a written test on the Belgian Highway Code (contact SH3603 for appointment)
c.
Insurance: a valid green insurance card, which shows the name of the applicant, the vehicle chassis number
and his address in BELGIUM. A SHAPE address (7010 SHAPE BELGIUM, APO AE …) is sufficient as
long as the words SHAPE BELGIUM appear in the address. . Insurance cards with the national address
and/or national license plates or faxes can not be accepted. By preference your green card should be valid for
01 year (+- 1 month).
d.
The document ‘Demande d’immatriculation’ (application to register a car, pink in colour) provided by the
dealer, with a 705 label affixed; the date, dealer’s stamp and signature in box ‘W’. The dealer does not have
to affix the label 904 in box ‘W’ and your private address must not appear on the ‘Demande
d’immatriculation’
e.
The registration fee of 45,00 Euro in cash (35,00 Euro for motorcycles, 55,,00 Euro for square plates)
f.
Extension of the validity of the registration (re-registration, after the initial registration) is free of charge.

RO will complete a form 15-10 (application to obtain the exemption of VAT) which must be returned
to the dealer after approval by the VAT Office.
4.
The registration of the vehicle must be initiated immediately after the purchase. Re-registration is due,
even when the car is not in use due to technical reasons.
5.
Your registration will be valid till your rotation date with a maximum validity of 03 years.

Trailers and caravans can not be purchased free of VAT.
