INTERNSHIP PLAN
EQUINE MANAGEMENT AT WEBB RANCHES, LLC

Internship Period: May 18, 2015 – August 15, 2014
INTERNSHIP OBJECTIVES:
1. Demonstrate ability to start an unbroken colt.
a. Using techniques developed by Bogie Webb & detailed in attached
documents, the student will progressively work an unbroken colt through the
stages of colt starting. This will be an ongoing process and will occur on a
daily basis. One on one instruction will be heavily offered in the beginning
and will taper as the student gains skills and confidence.
b. Student will start colts on a staggered basis so they will have horses at
different stages of the training process. Additional horses will be added to the
student’s work load as they are able to handle the added responsibility.
2. Assist with horse breeding.
a. Equipment preparation, including assembly of artificial vagina, determination
of temperature of water & use of lubricant etc, will be completed by student.
b. Student will safely handle stallion throughout breeding process, including
teasing of mares, approach of breeding dummy and collection of semen.
c. While catching mares for breeding, student will practice skills learned in
round pen regarding reading horses movements and intent.
d. In preparation for artificial insemination, student will clean mare and assist in
processing semen.
e. Student will have opportunity to observe ultrasound of bred and unbred mares
and will be able to identify corpus luteum, number and size of follicles, uterus,
uterine horn, fluid in the uterus & embryo etc.
3. Become familiar with embryo transfer processes.
a. In addition to daily breeding processes, student will have the opportunity to
work with our embryo transfer program.
b. Student will be able to identify a 7-8 day embryo using a microscope.
c. When preparing for embryo transfer process, student will follow sterile
techniques.
4. Observe and assist in foaling.
a. In preparation for foaling, student will be able to assist with placement of
FoalAlert System.
b. During foaling, student will observe mare’s behavior and will offer assistance
as is needed.
c. After foaling, student will help with registration of foals including
documentation of markings etc.
5. Prepare horses for sale.
a. An important part of equine management is the preparation of horses for sale.
The student will be closely involved in this preparation.
b. Grooming of horses for sale or photographs will be completed by student.
c. The student will handle horses during photographs and will be able to identify
the appropriate positioning, camera angle and lighting for best photographs.
d. Student will ride horse during videotaping and will be able to demonstrate
horse’s level of training accurately.
6. Participation in event production.
a. All students will assist in preparation for equine events held at Webb Ranches
including barrel racing, team roping, team penning, team sorting, clinics etc.
b. During events, students will be responsible for management of PA system,
announcing, secretarial assistance, ground preparation, proper measurement
and placement of equipment and livestock management.
As the ranching business is often unpredictable, so will be the daily events for an
internship student. While we attempt to maintain a set schedule, we often are
forced to adapt to veterinary emergencies, breakdowns and issues with weather.
