Chapter 1 Lesson 5 social studies test.
Which of California’s natural resources do you think is the most important? Explain.
I think water is the most important resource. In my opinion, water is the most
important, because we need water to survive. Clean water is needed for people to survive.
Animals also need water, along with plants, even though some desert plants don’t need as
much. Water is a nonrenewable resource, which can’t be made again by people or nature.
Water is not only crucial to the lives of humans but to animals and plants too.
Without water all living things will eventually die. In California this is even a bigger problem
because we are in a drought and water is very limited. People of California have to be
careful with the amounts they use because water is a nonrenewable resource. Once it runs
out no more will be made. Some people call water California’s liquid gold because it’s so
important.
How do people sometimes affect animal habitats? What can people do to protect
animal habitats?
All over the world, people destroy and help animal habitats. They destroy habitats
by cutting down trees, and by cutting down these trees animals’ homes are being destroyed.
People also destroy habitats by building buildings. These buildings take up space where
animals once made their home.
People also help improve habitats by building birdhouses and by providing zoos for
animals that are displaced. At the zoos, experts take care of animals and feed them giving
them another chance. As you can see, people make a difference in animal lives.
People harm animal habitats. They destroy trees that many animals call home to use
for lumber. Something that people don’t think of as being dangerous is called “Light
Pollution”. Light pollution is when people at night “clog” the stars with their own lights.
Baby seals use the natural lights made by the stars to find their way home, if there are no
stars showing because of artificial light, the seals get lost. It’s also hard for them to find their
prey without natural light.
Even though many people destroy animal habitats, there are people who care and
want to help save and protect where animals live. Some people put up signs to help others
become aware of saving land from construction. They help animals by stopping pollution
and by recycling more. There are some helpful humans who work at zoos to build natural
habitats.
People affect animal habitats by throwing trash in the ocean, chopping down trees
in the forest, and by overhunting. Marine animals can get tangled in trash, forest animals
have less places to hide, and overhunting brings down animal populations. People can
protect animal habitats by picking up trash at the beach, planting new trees, and by limiting
the amount of animals that are hunted.
