Excel 2010 - How to construct formulas using functions
The Home tab provides easy access to the most frequently used commands. The Home tab is divided into
several groups to help you apply changes to your spreadsheet. In the Editing group on the Home tab you
can click the AutoSum button to display a submenu which allows you to construct formulas using the Sum,
Average, Count Numbers, Max and Min functions.
Using the Home tab
1. Position the cursor in the result cell. Click the arrow to the right of the AutoSum button on the Home
tab to display a submenu listing the Sum, Average, Count Numbers, Max and Min functions
2. Click on the Sum function to construct the formula in the result cell. The function will automatically
place dotted lines around the cells to be added. Press  or click the green tick by the formula bar to
enter the formula in the result cell.
3. Click More Functions on the submenu to display the Insert Function dialog box where the full range
of functions are listed

Using the Formulas tab
The Formulas tab provides access to many other formula features.

Position the cursor in the result cell. Click the Formulas tab
Click the Insert Function button to display the Insert Function dialog box
You can list all the functions or list the functions by category
In the Select Function box you can click on the function you require and information on what the
formula does and how it is constructed displays at the bottom of the dialog box.
5. Click OK to enter the formula into the result cell

The Formulas tab displays the AutoSum button, which is also found on the Home tab.

Excel 2010 also provides a formula AutoComplete feature.
1. Position the cursor in the result cell
2. Begin typing the formula function, for example =SUM
3. Excel 2007 intuitively provides a list of the functions you may require. Select the function from the
list.
