English for
Researchers
Writing research can be difficult at the best of times. There are special
challenges for those whose first language is not English. The Centre
for Macquarie English (CME) has a range of programs that can assist
with English language training and the completion of IELTS
requirements. An on-line IELTS Master program has four modules in
academic writing, academic reading, listening and speaking. CME will
also provide English language assistance for research candidates in a
specially structured Faculty program. Ask your Associate Dean Higher
Degree Research for further information.
MUPRA is the Macquarie University Postgraduate Representative
Association whose membership includes people just like you. It
provides a range of workshops and associated information of direct
relevance to research candidates. It also helps students requiring
assistance in resolving issues relating to candidature and ensures the
University is well informed of student matters. A representative of
MUPRA is a member of the Higher Degree Research Committee. The
MUPRA website contains a list of programs relevant to research
candidates. MUPRA is affiliated with the Council of Australian
Postgraduate Associations (CAPA). CAPA is a representative body
and has produced a statement of minimum resources for postgraduate
students and is available on their website. It is called 2004 Statement
of Minimum Resources for Postgraduate Study
OH&S Chemical Safety Training - The aim of the training programs
is to provide knowledge and concepts in the application of hazardous
substances regulation, especially on how to conduct a workplace
assessment and read a Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). This
training module is required for OH&S Coordinators and OH&S
Committee Members, for managers/supervisors of laboratories.
Statistical advice should be sought early in candidature to minimise
the occurrence of later problems. Advice on methodology and data
collection methods as well as data analysis and interpretation is
available from Professor McNeil at the Statistical Consulting
Service. Enrolled students in the Department of Economics, The
Department of Education and the Department of Psychology are able
to contact their local advisers and should do so in the first instance.
These advisers are not available to assist students enrolled in
Faculties/Departments other than their own.

The Department of Linguistics occasionally offers a range of
workshops to help HDR candidates. Preparing a Thesis Proposal is
aimed at HDR students at the outset of their study and provides
models and guidelines for writing a thesis proposal with particular
emphasis on the introductory stage and the expression of aims,
research questions or hypotheses. Writing a Literature Review
describes the purpose and structure of a Literature Review and its
relationship to the research question. Expressing Your Voice
provides valuable tools for quoting, summarising and paraphrasing
evidence and also has strategies for avoiding plagiarism. Features of
Academic Writing helps in the development of writing clear English
and explores cohesion in writing. Writing a Research Report
examines the purpose, structure and language of a research report
through the analysis of examples. These programs have excellent
feedback from research candidates.
EndNote is one bibliographic management program that allows you to
effectively manage bibliographic data. It does this by recording and
organising references; automatically inserting citations into Word
documents and formatting bibliographies; and importing references
from remote databases and library catalogues. Macquarie University
Library offers training classes and online tutorials in EndNote to
research students.
You will need to check with your Principal Supervisor about the
referencing style that you should use which is most appropriate to your
discipline area. The APA style is mostly used in Linguistics,
Psychology and Education while the Harvard style is mostly used in
Cultural Studies, Anthropology, Indigenous Studies, Economic and
Financial Studies as well as Environmental and Life Sciences. Law
used the Australian Guide to Legal Citations while Cultural Studies
also Chicago and MLA, and International Communications uses
Turabian. EndNote can generally cope with the different referencing
styles.
Research Resources Consultations (Liaison Librarian Service)
are available through The Library. There are two discipline-based
liaison research support teams: Social Sciences & Humanities and
Sciences which supports the research activities of academic staff and
research candidates. For assistance or more information about
services available, please contact the departmental liaison librarian.
Develop library & information skills through using the Library’s selfpaced information skills online modules - Information Skills Online
(online tutorials). Use the library to find information, improving your
search strategy, searching databases, using the Internet for research.

RESEARCH
OFFICE
Understanding
Ethics
The University maintains strict control over all research activities
involving people, animals and biosafety via the Ethics Committees.
Research must meet the ethical and safety requirements of the
relevant government legislation, and satisfy the guidelines of external
funding agencies such as the National Health and Medical Research
Council (NHMRC). Any research in which such issues are relevant
must first be approved by the relevant ethics or biosafety committee.

The Macquarie University Postgraduate Research Fund (PGRF) is
administered by your Faculty. The normal expectation is that an
applicant will be in the third or later second year of doctoral enrolment,
or early second year of MPhil enrolment, with significant research
results achieved. Candidates are expected to draw on Faculty funding
for initial conference and related research support.

Development
Sometimes the hardest thing is just getting out of bed in the morning,
but once you are out, it all just clicks in. Three and a half years in a
PhD means that there are some days when it seems easier to make a
soufflé rise than get stuck into your Literature Review or your failed
experiment write-up. The Counselling Service can help manage
Procrastination, particularly research degree procrastination and the
occasional disappointment. Workshops are conducted throughout the
year. The hardest thing may well be to make a workshop booking!
Whether you are at the beginning of your research degree or near
completion, it is important to have an understanding about what is
involved in making well informed decisions about your career future.
Your career choice and its implementation might be focussed on an
academic career, or equally one in the private or public sector. The
Career Development Centre will be conducting a number of
Workshops and Careers in Focus Seminars, specifically for HDR
candidates during the year. One-one-one advice and a range of
Online Career Development materials for HDR students are also
available.
