DEPARTMENT OF AGRONOMY
1.
INTRODUCTION
With the fundamental belief that Agronomy is a major component of Agricultural Sciences, our
Agronomy Graduate Curriculum is broad based to include all major areas of crop production
such as crop science, soil science, horticultural science and crop protection. The programme
consists practical and theoretical studies on recent developments in Agronomy.
2.
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the programme is to train graduates of Agronomy to be able to accomplish the
following:
(1) Engage in production and research that would provide relevant and appropriate solutions
to the country’s food production problems.
(2) Take up employment anywhere in areas related to Agronomy.
(3) Profitably put their skills into operation by establishing and operating their own farming
enterprises.

DEGREES OFFERED
The Department Agronomy offers post-graduate courses and research leading to the degree of
Master of Technology (M. Tech), Master of Philosophy (M. Phil) and Doctor of Philosophy
(Ph.D) in the areas of Crop Science, Soil science, Horticultural Science and Crop Protection.

(i)
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
M. Tech. Degree: - Candidates for the M. Tech degree must have obtained at least a
Second Class B. Sc or B. Tech degree in General Agriculture, Crop Science, Soil
Science, Horticulture, Crop Protection and relevant disciplines.
(ii)
M. Phil. Degree: - First Degree in relevant discipline with at least a second class lower
division and an M. Sc / M. Tech degree with a weighted average of at least 50%.
(iii)
Ph. D. Degree: - M. Sc/ M. tech. Degree with relevant discipline with a weighted
average of at least 60% or an M. Phil. Degree in relevant discipline with a weighted
average of 55%. M. Phil. Candidates who sired 60^ in the conversion examination may
be allowed to proceed to the Ph. D. Programme after spending a minimum of one year
in the M. Phil. Programme.

PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTS
(A)
M. Tech Degree
The normal duration is a minimum of 18 months for a full-time study and 24 months for
part-time study.
(i)
Course Requirements
Full-time students shall be required to register for a minimum of 30 units and a maximum
of 35 units or as the department may specify from time to time subject to the approval of
the Board of Postgraduate Studies. Part-time students shall be required to register, in any
one year, for not more 60% if the minimum course work required for the award of the
degree. Core or compulsory courses that should be taken and passed in an area of
specialization will be decided by the Supervisory Committee of each candidate. This is in
addition to the department’s compulsory courses. Candidates may be required to take
remedial or other relevant courses where necessary and shall be taken as requirements for
graduation courses.
(ii)
Assessment
Candidates shall be required to take examinations at the end of the Semester in which the
course has been completed. In addition to successfully completing a prescribed course
programme, candidates must submit an original dissertation, which will be externally
examined and orally defended. To quality for the award of the degree, candidate must
pass all examinations and the pass mark shall be 45%.
(B)
M. Phil Degree
The minimum duration is 24 monthly for a full- time study and 36 months for a part-time
study.
(i)
Course Requirements
Formal course work shall be an integral part of the M. Phil degree programme.
Candidates will register for and pass all the courses specified by the Department.
(ii)
Assessment
Candidates shall be required to take examinations in each of the courses at the end of the
semester. Pass mark shall be 50%. In addition, each candidate must submit an original
dissertation of acceptable quality written under the direction of the supervisor(s), and
conforming to a format prescribed by the Postgraduate School. The dissertation will be
externally examined and Orally defended.
(C).
Ph. D Degree
The minimum duration is 36 months for full-time study and 60 months for part-time
study.
(i)
Course Requirements
The programme shall be by original, independent research study involving laboratory and
or fieldwork.
(ii)
Assessment
Candidates shall be assessed based on the presentation of a complete research proposal,
seminar on the research topic towards the middle of the programme and submission of
the thesis, which shall be externally and orally examined.
(7).
RESEARCH FACILITIES
The Department is acquiring facilities for basic analysis in Agronomy such as plant
growth and yield analysis, plant and soil analysis among others. The university Library is
growing rapidly in the collection of literature on Agronomy. The teaching and research
farm is also being reorganized to accommodate postgraduate research work on the field.
There is also enough laboratory space to accommodate post-graduate work in AgroInternational Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan has indicated their willingness to
make their Laboratory, field and Library facilities available for post-graduate work in the
Department.
