Lib Dems Fight To Save Bees
Broxtowe Liberal Democrats are calling on the borough council to lead the
way in protecting the nation’s bees.
The bee population of the UK has declined dramatically over the last few
years. Much of the decline has been linked to Neonicotinoids, a relatively new
sort of pesticides. The Lib-Dems have proposed a motion to the borough
council calling on the council to ban their use by staff, contractors or tenants.
Lib-Dem leader Cllr David Watts said:
“One third of food that people eat is linked to pollination by bees. It is very
worrying that the bee population of the UK has declined dramatically in recent
years, down by 18% between 2009 and 2010. Pesticides, and in particular
Neonicotinoids, are one of the reasons for this. Local authorities can play a
really significant role in reducing this threat, and Broxtowe can lead the way.”
