I am a professor at Department of Political Science and Director of the Centre for EU Studies (CEUS) at Ghent
University. The CEUS has developed a distinctive expertise in the study of the European Union’s external
relations, in particular the EU’s external trade and development relations. It is also an active member of the
Ghent Centre for Global Studies. As a research group, CEUS also aims to highlight the broader societal
relevance of its academic research and to be actively involved in the public debate about the EU. Fruitful
interactions between research and teaching have been established through the Master in EU Studies at Ghent
University. I was (co-)supervisor of 18 successfully defended PhDs in the area of EU external relations and I am
currently supervising several research projects on this topic.

Expertise and selected publications

(2008), Europe’s global social policies (2008), and EU democracy promotion (2015), and special issues
of the European Foreign Affairs Review (2009 and 2011), Res Publica (2008), Journal of Contemporary
European Research (2013), Contemporary Politics (2014) and Cambridge Review of International
Affairs (forthcoming 2015). I teach on similar subjects within Ghent University’s Master EU Studies
programme. I am a guest professor at Sichuan University (China) and the University of Canterbury
