THE CORNWALL HISTORICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Summer is in full swing and so is the Cornwall Historical Society. Spring ended with a very
enjoyable and successful Annual Dinner held on April 18th at the Trestle Restaurant, honoring the
150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. The proceeds went to our William E. Fulton
Memorial Scholarship Fund.
Our plans for Independence Day include a float in the parade and a booth on Town Hall
grounds. I’ll be driving my red 1966 Ford Mustang convertible. So look for it and our hippie
student interns as our flower children. Our theme will be “Back to the Future”.
Set up begins at 9 AM. Man the booth, we could use your help, join the festivities and excitement
of the 4th of July in Cornwall! E-mail us with your availability () and renew old friendships and
make new ones.
The more the merrier!!
Thank you for your support, Bob Schwarzler

A NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
Our second Historical Society Book Club met
on May 13. “Dragonfly in Amber” of the
Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon was
discussed.
Gabaldon’s books follow no specific genre.
They have been described by Salon Magazine
as “The smartest historical sci-fi, adventureromance story ever written by a science Ph.D.
with a background in scripting ”Scrooge
McDuck” comics.
The group really enjoyed the STARZ mini
series “Outlander” and has decided to continue
Claire and Jamie’s saga by reading Book 3 –
“Voyager”
Come join us for a spirited discussion, tea and
biscuits on Wednesday July 29, 7 PM in our
museum at Town Hall. RSVP 845 458-5389,
leave a message. Space is limited.

30th Anniversary Bandstand Rededication
Concert
The Centennial Bandstand in the Village, built in 1985 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
the incorporation of the Village was recently graced with a much needed new floor and other
renovations for the 30th year of it existence. The ceremony was held Sunday, June 14, Flag Day,
with over 100 people in attendance. The day was clear and beautiful. Pastor Tricia Callahan from
the Cornwall Presbyterian Church gave the Invocation and three grade school children led us in
the Pledge of Allegiance. Ken Cashman sang The National Anthem in perfect voice followed by
recognition of dignitaries by Master of Ceremonies, Kenneth Schmidt and remarks by Village
Mayor Brendan Coyne. Colette Fulton, Village Historian and Vice President of the Cornwall
Historical Society gave some brief comments on history of the Bandstand and Nancy Bryan,
Chaplain of Storm King Engine Co. # 2 offered the Benediction.
Gregory Phillips of the Cornwall String Ensemble announced the music for the concert and
introduced the performers, members also of the Newburgh Symphony. They played an eclectic
mix of music for an appreciative audience. A glass bowl with a likeness of the bandstand painted
on it by Mary Donahue was given to Joe Gill of the Cornwall Local in a raffle at the end of the
program. Jones Farm donated the cookies, iced tea and lemonade served at the reception at the
Storm King Engine House. Funds are still being accepted by the Restoration Committee to help
pay for a new flagpole and kiosk that can be sent to the Village under the committee’s name.
Concerts are held every Tues. evening at 7:00 PM and are free to the public. Performances will be
posted in the kiosk.
