Happy New Year!

I hope everyone had a fantastic break. Here is a look at the week ahead as your fourth grader starts quarter 3.

Math:

This week will be learning about the perimeter and area of a rectangle and complex figures. Students will be able to apply the area and perimeter formulas for rectangles in real world and mathematical problems. For example, find the width of a rectangular room given the area of the flooring and the length, by viewing the area

formula as a multiplication equation with an unknown factor.

Students will be coming home to measure objects around the house as part of their homework this week. Please have a ruler or tape measurer handy to assist with their measurements. If you do not have one, let me know so I can send one home with your child. There will be a test this Friday.

ELA

The focus in reading for the first part of the third quarter will be historical fiction.

Students will be analyzing how historical events shaped peoples lives by reading various texts such as fictional stories, firsthand accounts, and interpreting historical pictures.

Your child will need to select a historical fiction chapter book this week. They can select one from school, home, or the public library. Please take time this week to discuss with your child the book they selected.

Here are some suggested activities to do at home:

 Check out nonfiction books or read articles online with your child about the time period they selected.

 Watch a movie that goes along with the time period.

 Read a related historical fiction book from the same time period.

Social Studies/Science

We will start out the week in social studies talking about the economy. Students will learn how human, environmental, and technological factors affect the growth and development of our state. We also will discus the basic concepts of market economy: supply, demand, scarcity, entrepreneurship, etc. These lessons will be preparing students for the fourth grade’s Enterprise Day that is held in March.

After our social studies unit will switch over to science. This quarter our class will be learning about magnetism and electricity.
