Research Plan
As a student majoring in computer science, the development in this field always draws my
attention, and I feel especially fascinated by the grid technology.
The objective of grid is to form a cooperative working environment by organizing millions of
distributed computers to solve the problems of great complexity; it also gives more efficient
solution in sharing the web resources. In fact, some widely used applications such as Bit Torrent,
Napster, and SETI, have actually implemented part of the grid concepts and enabled us share
resources all over the Internet with few efforts. It’s right these advancements that excite me so
much and urge me to work for this technology.
I find the project of P2P Ubiquitous Computing Grid in the lab fits my interest well. By reading the
outline of this project, and basing on my understanding of grid, I think there are some problems
should be solved for the development of the ubiquitous computing grid.
The first, the bottleneck of grid should be overcome. In this project, it’s the Global Resource
Manager that is employed to manage the web resources. The manage works, including recording
all the change of grid resources, allocating resources to the user and so on, are so heavy that an
effective allocation scheme mechanism is band to be established to ensure load-balance among
the managers; or the computation capacity and communication bandwidth of managers can be
the bottleneck of the grid.
The second, security is another key issue. The importance of the resources on grid varies greatly.
Some resources, such as the military information, high tech research information, are too
important to be readily exposed on the open grid environment without special protection. In this
case, a set of grid specified security mechanism is inevitable.
And the third, the ubiquitous computing grid emphasizes that all users can share resources
completely independent of the physical computing environment. The scene that trouble may rise
from is that some rare resources are located only in a few fixed places; accordingly the visiting
expense for the users who are far from these resources will increase. How to minimize these
visiting differences, as I think, is a problem to have work done.
These problems above are, in my opinion, where my research plan may lie on, and sincerely I wish
to get your instruction in case there were any deficiencies in it. I have know long that Japan always
ranks high in the development of the supercomputers, which provides an excellent base for the
development of grid; also a project called “National Grid Research Program” is lunched in Japan,
aiming to develop Grid Computer that is greatly faster than any supercomputer that ever emerged.
Therefore I am sure that in Japan I can find the advanced grid technology. If I am honored to join
this lab, I have also made plan for the time before I entering ** University: while keeping on
improving my Japanese, on the other hand, I will work in lab as much as possible, both to enhance
my understanding about this field and prepare for my future research.
