Host two biannual elected official breakfasts on topics related to obesity prevention, resulting in increased awareness about the role of elected officials in setting policy to enhance access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity. Our goals include: 1) At least 1 of the breakfasts will educate on topics directly relating to overarching strategies; 2) At least 8 elected officials or staff will attend each breakfast; and 3) At least 75% of attendees will agree that the information presented will be useful in their work, that they came away with new information and ideas about how to play a role in enhancing local policy. Identify a timeline for completion of the project. Both breakfasts will be completed by March 2014. This project is on-going. How does this project impact health equity? We will extend invitations to elected officials who represent jurisdictions with large numbers of residents suffering health disparities; we will also endeavor to hold at least one of the breakfasts in a disproportionately impacted neighborhood / district. First event is scheduled for June 21, 2013, in collaboration with Hunger Advocacy Network. 2. Second event will be developed (see COI support activities), partners identified, policymakers identified and invited, and the event hosted in October / November 2013. Current update: 10/1/2014 Update: Elected Officials’ Breakfast: A Discussion about Safe Routes to School was held on Friday, September 19, 2014 in collaboration with HHSA. Over 60 individuals attended the event, including elected officials and/or representatives from County Board of Supervisors; Cities of Coronado, Lemon Grove, Oceanside, Chula Vista; Senator Barbara Boxer’s office; CA Speaker Toni Atkins’ office; and several school boards including San Ysidro, Vista, Alpine, Updated October 2014 Lakeside. The keynote speaker was Mark Fenton and panelists included Lemon Grove City Manager Graham Mitchell, Brian Gaze of Circulate San Diego, and Michelle Lieberman of the Safe Routes to School National Partnership. Event evaluations were very positive, with 100% of respondents indicating that the information presented was useful in their work and that they came away with ideas about how they can play a role in enhancing safe routes to school in their communities. 3/28/14: Activity 1. Complete. (6/21/13) "Hunger in San Diego" was held on 6/21/13 with the Hunger Advocacy Network (HAN). The keynote speaker was George Manolo-LeClair, ED of California Food Policy Advocates. He spoke about the root causes of hunger and policies that can be enacted to address the challenges faced by those experiencing food insecurity. The breakfast was attended by 50 people, including 11 elected officials and/or their staff members representing County Board Of Supervisors, State Assemblymembers, State Senator, US Senator, US Congressman). Attendess reported that the breakfast helped them better understad HAN, food insecurity in San Diego, anti-hunger legislation, and make new contacts. Activity 2. Complete (12/11/13) A breakfast was held on December 11, 2013 to discuss the intersection between transportation, business, and health. Event partners included San Diego County HHSA, Supervisor Dave Roberts, Supervisor Bill Horn, Walk San Diego, Move San Diego, and Palomar Health. The keynote speaker was Hilary Norton, Executive Director of FAST (Fixing Angelenos Stuck in Traffic). Panel presentations were also given by Nick Macchione, D. Todd Phillips with the North County Chamber of Commerce, and Barbara Hamilton with Palomar Health. The breakfast was attended by 75 people, including 7 elected officials and/or their staff members. New 3rd Activity. In progress. A third breakfast was scheduled for 2013, but has been postponed to September 2014. This breakfast will focus on safe routes to school. The domain plans to partner with Walk San Diego, SRTS Taskforce, and Circulate San Diego (formerly Move San Diego and WalkSanDiego). The State Secretary of Transportation has been invited to discuss the state’s new SRTS rules and funding structure; the domain has not been able to identify a date that works his schedule yet. The breakfast will include a panel presentation moderated by Elise Lowe that focuses on one model school-city SRTS partnership. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership was invited to present on the new SRTS toolkit for elected officials on accessing SRTS dollars. The domain is finalizing the date of the breakfast and the keynote speaker. The breakfast is tentatively planned to take place at Caltrans. The domain will conduct an event evaluation and meet with two elected officials and/or staff to determine the event’s impact on elected officials developing plans to implement policy or activities related to the event topic. The current political environment often does not support additional policy development. 3/28/14 Update: The Domain has had difficulty getting a hold of the State Secretary of Transportation’s office.
