Does Payer Status Impact Pediatric ED Visits During An Influenza Pandemic?
Primary Investigator: James R. Young
Preceptors: Lalit Bajaj, Genie Roosevelt, and Sara Deakyne – Department of Pediatric Emergency
Medicine
September 2010 – present
Funding: Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department, The Children’s Hospital – Aurora, Colorado
Description: Through a retrospective query of the electronic health record for visit to The Children’s
Hospital Emergency Department and outlying emergency departments and urgent care centers, evaluated
the impact of payer status on pediatric ED visits during the H1N1 pandemic. Over 46,000 visits were
tallied, and using logistic regression analyses, concluded that children with a public payer had a 1.6 times
higher odds of having a visit to the emergency department or urgent care center for an influenza-like illness
during the pandemic compared to those with a private payer while controlling for age and comorbidities.
Abstract submitted to the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference & Exhibition 2011.
