Shared Governance Council
Duties and Responsibilities
As students we have the right to be included in the university decision making process.
This shared decision making process is what we refer to as Shared Governance. This
process of Shared Governance takes place all over the University hence University Wide
Committees. University Wide Committees can be grouped in four categories; Academic
Senate Committees, Administrative Committees, College Specific Committees, and
Auxiliary Boards. Every student committee member is also a part of our Shared
Governance Council where committee members from all four categories have the chance
to report what is going on in their committee, ask for feedback from the group on an issue
they are facing and identifying possible areas of support for initiatives.
Job Description:
As a voting member on a University wide committee you are a representative for the
students. This means that, you will actively search for issues that affect students,
prioritize those issues, and present them to your committee or Shared Governance for
solution-oriented answers, which then lead to action. Being on a University Wide
committee means you will be working alongside faculty and administrators. While
serving on University Wide committees never undervalue your voice because your voice
is usually the most valuable. In addition to the larger issues, a Shared Governance
Committee member must be available to deal with the individual needs and concerns of
the students. Overall, your position as a committee member is at the service of the
