Angle of Elevation and Depression Project
Angles of elevation and depression can be used to solve many real world problems. In this
project we will use these angles to solve for the heights of various things around the school.
With a partner, you will be given one tape measure and one angle measuring device. Follow the
steps below and fill in your data on the chart.
Object being measured
Distance away
Angle on the Protractor
Angle of Elevation
(90 – Previous Column)
Bottom of the upright
Top of the upright
Soccer Goal
Your object of choice
1) Use your data and knowledge of trigonometry to find the heights of all three objects you
measured.
2) Create a project in the format of your choice that includes the following:
- A description of what you are measuring and how you measured it.
- A picture of the objects with all parts labeled.
- A table or chart of all the data you collected and calculated, please be sure to
show your work for all your calculations.
-All trigonometric equations set up and solved properly with all work shown.
-A mathematical solution for the length of the upright and a paragraph describing
the process.
- Your group must also post the results of the length of the upright and the soccer
goal on the Pre-College blog site. The final project must include the class average
of the heights for these two objects.
- A summary of why this process is important and how this can be useful in other
areas of your life and life in general. Use your knowledge of
Geometry and Trigonometry to aid in your summary.
3) Any inappropriate language/behavior on this blog site, when are outside, or on your
final project will result in an automatic zero for you and your group on this project, so use
please good judgment.
