Scotland has been a part of Great Britain
since 1707. The capital of Scotland is
Edinburgh, it has 440 000 people. But the
biggest city in Scotland is Glasgow, it has
685000 inhabitants. The whole of Scotland
has 5 million inhabitants.
One of Great Britain´s highest mountains is
in Scotland. It is called Ben Nevis, it´s 1344
m.
The biggest and the deepest lakes are also in
Scotland. The biggest lake is called Loch
Lomond. It´s 70 square metres big. The
name of the deepest lake is Loch Ness. It´s
229 metres deep.
Loch Ness is a really famous place, because
of the well-known sea-monster Nessie that
lives there. There are many stories about
Nessie. Some people think that she is a
Plesiosauri. A Plesiosauri is an old water
gecko, from the dinosaur´s time. The
Plesiosauri has been extinct for 65 million
years. A Plesiosauri doesn´t have the bone
structure to hold up the head over the
water. Many people have seen Nessie do
that. Another thought is that she is a giant
eel that lives on the bottom of the lake.
1993 Bertram Millis Circus said that the
one that catches Nessie will get £ 20. 000.
Something else that is special with Scotland
is kilts and bagpipes. A kilt is an man-skirt
that many Irish men wear. It´s made of
wool and has often a checked patten on it. A
bagpipe is a wind-instrument. It looks like a
flute and a bag of leather.
If you want to go on sunny vacation, you
shouldn´t go to Scotland because it´s a
country with lots of rain and not that much
sun. But it´s a bit warmer on the east side of
Scotland. If you like castles you should go to
Scotland. There are many beautiful castles
there.
There is nothing special with the Scottish
kitchen but one of Scotland´s most famous
dishes are Haggis, it´s made of liver, offal,
oatmeal, onions and spices. You often eat it
with mashed potatoes and mashed
rutabagas.
