Meeting Expectations for Senators
Aloha Senators,
Welcome to the 2014-2015 Senate! Thank you for representing the voice of your Academic Unit.
Together, let’s carry out the purpose of the Senate in a way that is pono, transparent, respectful,
and with integrity. Let’s hold one another accountable for our words and actions. This will help to
ensure that all voices are heard, our meetings are productive and positive, and the tasks on the
agenda are discussed and completed in a timely and effective manner. I humbly ask you to help
me, as Faculty Senate Chair, accomplish these at every meeting. As a Senator, please…











Be respectful
Respect different perspectives
Respect the role of the Chair and the Senate
Encourage every Senator to share his/her voice
Listen attentively
Keep your statements concise and relevant to the discussion/topic at hand
Be mindful of your sharing time to allow time for others to share
Add to the discussion/topic at hand if there is something new to add
Allow views to be expressed uninterrupted
Minimize interruptions and side conversations
Come prepared by reading all documents ahead of time
In addition, according the Constitution (Article III - Organization of the Senate, Section 6), Senators
have the following responsibilities:

Attend all Senate meetings or provide a substitute.
Report Senate actions and information to their Academic Units.
Vote on Senate actions representing their Academic Units.
Serve on Ad-hoc committees as designated by the Chair.
If a proxy is sent, the proxy must review the agenda and relevant documents prior to the meeting
and confers with the Senator on how to vote.
Dissemination of information and communication between Senators and their Academic Units
should be timely and transparent. If a matter is to be voted on in a subsequent Faculty Senate
meeting, Senators should poll their units at a meeting or via email.

Proposers, UHPA Directors & Other Representative Attendees

Each Senator promises to carry out the purpose of the Senate in a way that is pono,
