HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF OPEN DAYS –
Don’t wander aimlessly….try the following:

Obtain an Open Day Guide and plan beforehand (eg from
websites
like
www.deakin.edu.au/openday,
or
www.openday.unimelb.edu.au) - some hard copies of thea
Guides are in the careers room

Plan to be at Open Day when relevant information sessions
are conducted

Allow sufficient time for your visit; two hours or so would be
advisable

Speak to staff about courses that interest you - note your
questions beforehand

Get a student perspective - speak to students studying
courses that interest you

Collect information/brochures

Ask about industry based-learning (IBL) opportunities; these
can assist with gaining employment

Ask about international study opportunities – a very popular
option

Consider transport issues; is the campus accessible from
where you live?

Check the environment where you will study; will you be
happy there for three/four years?

Consider the facilities/clubs offered at your preferred
institution

Consider visiting a rural campus, especially if you think you
won’t obtain a high enough ATAR for a metropolitan campus.
ATAR’s are often lower and they often offer more personal
assistance, accommodation, and a lifestyle which will suit
some students.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Planning to apply for a course involving an
interview/folio presentation/ audition? As part of the selection
process you may be asked what you learnt/found of interest about
the course at Open Day. Attendance is A MUST!

 Education Update
The Faculty of Education have introduced a new course structure
for all its undergraduate teaching courses for 2014. This has been
done to address the design of the new Australian Curriculum and
teaching in the 21st century. The new structure meets the
requirements of the Australian Institute of School Leadership
(AITSL), the Australia Children’s Education and Care Quality
Authority (ACECQA) and the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
Students considering a career in teaching should browse the
following link detailing all the teaching courses on offer
http://edu.monash.edu/courses/ or contact the university via
email at edu-courseinfo@monash.edu or call us on (03) 9905 0014.
 Studying Science at Monash University
Monash University is introducing a new Bachelor of Science
Advanced (Global Challenges) course in 2014. Besides having a
strong science focus, students will also gain skills in leadership,
entrepreneurship and communication “This course will develop a
new generation of science graduates who are armed with the skills
and experiences to use science to address complex global
challenges, push boundaries, innovate and lead change,” Professor
Scott O'Neill, Dean of the Faculty of Science said.Students will also
undertake two internships, at least one internationally, and will be
financially supported by the University. These will broaden their
experience and set them up with practical skills to give them an
employment edge. There will be a year-long project in which
students work with peers and mentors in partnership with an
external organisation to tackle an issue of real global significance.
The course is open to a small cohort of 25 and entrance is subject
to ATAR score (above 90), a written submission and an interview.
For more information about the Bachelor of Science Advanced
(Global Challenges), please visit
www.monash.edu/have-you-got-the-edge,
email
scienquiries@monash.edu or call 03 9906 4604.
 New Course at the Berwick Campus: Bachelor of Counselling

counselling in 2014. Recognised by the Australian Counselling
Association (ACA), the degree will provide students with a solid
background in psychology, as well as in-field placement
opportunities and will focus on delivering counselling to diverse
communities, to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. At
completion of the degree, graduates will be job ready as this
course does not require further postgraduate qualifications to find
accredited employment (unlike a psychologist).
The VCE entry requirements are Units 3 & 4 with a study score of at
least 30 in English (EAL) or 25 in any other English. The VTAC course
code for this course is 2800110231. For more information, please

be offered in the Problem Based Learning (PBL) mode that is only
available from the Faculty of Business and Economics at Peninsula
campus. Visit: www.buseco.monash.edu.au/undergrad/bbus/pbl/

PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES: CHANGES TO APAC REQUIREMENTS
It is important for students to note that only studies undertaken
within an APAC-accredited degree will lead to the further training
required to practise or register as a psychologist in Australia.
Students are strongly advised to check the latest list of accredited
programs (Don’t panic, there are many!) on the APAC website at
www.psychologycouncil.org.au/
The education and training requirement for General Registration is
a six year sequence comprising a four year accredited sequence of
study such as an honours degree followed by two years of
supervised practice as a Provisional Psychologist. An approved
Master’s degree plus one year of supervised practice was the
previous standard. It may well be that a Master’s degree is still
preferred for employment.
NEWS FROM VICTORIA UNIVERSITY
 Bachelor of Youth Work/Sport & Recreation
VU’s double degree, the Bachelor of Youth Work / Bachelor of
Sport and Recreation Management is the only course of its kind in
Australia, designed for students who want to work with young
people, but who are also interested in a sport and recreation
aspect so that they have those added skills to work in the
community. The double degree will not only provide students
with a sound professional foundation for working with young
people, but it will also teach students the specialist skills and
knowledge to provide appropriate individual support for young
people who are struggling with aspects of their lives. As this course
also leads into education, it is registered with Victorian Institute of
Teaching so students could do a Diploma of Education afterwards.
Graduates create lots of choices for themselves, and VU works
closely with peak bodies like football clubs, the AFL, Vic Soccer,
that employ graduates to work in their community programs. Find
out more at:

 The Diamond Series: Robotics and Science Seminar
The Diamond Series: Education Conversations in the Community is a
series of seminars that allow staff from discipline areas across
Victoria University to share their current research and teaching
interests with school students and staff and the wider community.
In this session, Deborah Lipson will discuss “Robots and science” –
the practice and advantages of science and maths curricula in
creating Lego robots. Robotics relies on the creativity, problem
solving, lateral thinking and originality of the constructor. Learn

through construction activities.
