Kaz enters as teacher
introduces as friend.
Puppet 1: Hello. My name is Kaz. I am nine years old.
Teacher: How are you Kaz?
Puppet 1: I am fine. Thank you. How are you?
Teacher: I am fine. Thank you.
Puppet: What is this?
Teacher: This is a black bear. Lets learn about this mammal.
Whiteboard Vocabulary
Teacher: (Teacher identifies item/answers the question and then
introduces vocabulary words in context)
Teacher: Let’s hear a story.
List the four vocabulary
words here:
1.black bear
2.hibernate in winter
3. forest
4. long cold winter
The teacher says the word
in context while drawing.
She pauses and pulls hand
away from the tablet. She
pauses and says the target
vocabulary word again. She

Teaching Context (Story Room)
I am a Black Bear
I am a mammal
I live in the Temperate Forest
How do I adapt
I am the world’s most common and adaptable bear. I hibernate in the
winter. This protects me from the long cold winter and lack of food.
Story is presented as a
rhythmic chant.
Activity 1
students will use a bear cut out puppet and place the bear on the picture
grid that corresponds with the target phrase.

Students will act out and use gestures when given the target phrases
black bear- hold out hands like claws and growl like a bear
live in the forest-stand on tippy toes and extend arms above their heads
and wave hands to represent branches and leaves
hibernate in the winter- lay down on the floor and pretend to sleep
protect from the cold winter- hug body and shake to represent the cold
weather

Teacher: What did you learn today?
Puppet: This is a black bear. It lives in the forest. It hibernates in the winter
to protect it from the cold weather and lack of food.
