Test Corrections
4. Write a sentence containing a pair of dashes.
There is only one thing in this world that matters—happiness.
Dashes are used to set off a short summary after a complete main clause
I did not provide an answer for this question.
II
3. Combine the three sentences below into one sentence without using any conjunctions or passive
verbs.
George attends Alma College. George is a junior. George is majoring in biology.
George is a junior at Alma College who is majoring in biology.
George is a junior at Alma College, majoring in biology.
The phrase “who is majoring” is passive, and this specifically asked to not use passive verbs. In passive
sentences, the thing receiving the action is the subject of the sentence while the thing doing the action
is near the end of the sentence.
III
1. Write a sentence in which you demonstrate how to use proper punctuation and MLA in-text
citation when you quote a sentence from a book. To write this sentence, use all of the following
information:
Quote: Writing is refined thinking. Author of quote: Stephen King. King’s book: On Writing. Page
number: 131.
“Writing is refined thinking.” (131) Stephen King. On Writing.
Many agree with Stephen King, author of On Writing who explains that “Writing is refined thinking.”
(131).
I did not read the directions correctly and cited it incorrectly. When citing a quote in a sentence, include
the author’s name, italicize the title of the book, use quotations for the quote, and cite the page number
following the quote.
3. Select the sentence which correctly demonstrates how to use proper punctuation and MLA in-text
citation when quoting a sentence from a newspaper article.
A. In his review “Seeking Mr. and Mrs. Right for a Baby on the Way,” New York Times film critic A.O.
Scott writes that Juno’s immaturity resides in her familiar adolescent assumption that she understands
the world better than her elders do (1).
B. In his review “Seeking Mr. and Mrs. Right for a Baby on the Way,” New York Times film critic A.O.
Scott writes, ‘Juno’s immaturity resides in her familiar adolescent assumption that she understands the
world better than her elders do’ (p. 1).
C. In his review “Seeking Mr. and Mrs. Right for a Baby on the Way,” New York Times film critic A.O.
Scott writes, “Juno’s immaturity resides in her familiar adolescent assumption that she understands the
world better than her elders do” (1).
I originally chose B.
C would be correct because it correctly quotes the article, italicized the name of the paper, and quotes
the quotation correctly preceding the page number.
B. Pronouns: Revise each of the following sentences to fix the problem within it.
1. A teenager should be given enough freedom to prove they are responsible.
Teenagers should be given responsibilities in order to gain freedom.
I did not provide an answer for this question.
The pronoun “they” is used within the sentence. With no antecedents sentences are weak.
2. Everybody should do their best on this test.
Each student should perform optimally on this test.
The original sentence contained an indefinite pronoun, used to generally group people and the pronoun
“their”.
Circle the correct word in parentheses.
4. The transfer students were happy to meet Carol and ( I / me ).
I originally chose I.
Me would be the correct choice because it is an object pronoun, which means that it refers to the
person that the action of a verb is being done to. The students were happy to meet (me).
E. Punctuating Titles: Revise each of the following sentences to fix the problem(s) within it.
3. Professor Vivian’s second novel is called Lamb Bright Saviors.
Professor Vivian’s second novel is called “Lamb Bright Saviors”.
Professor Vivian’s second novel is called Lamb Bright Saviors.
Books and things that are substantial such as books, newspapers, and albums are italicized where
articles, songs, and chapters are put into quotations.
F. Punctuation Problems: Revise each of the following sentences to fix the problem(s) within it.
1. She said my essay was “interesting”, but I think she meant “boring”.
She said my essay was ‘interesting’, but I think she meant ‘boring’.
She said my essay was interesting, but I think she meant boring.
Quotation marks should not be used because this is not a direct quote from the source.
G. Subject and Verb Agreement:
1. Each of the actors (was/were) given an audition.
I originally chose were.
Was is the correct answer because each of the actors was individually given an audition. The word
“was” is used for singular subjects that underwent a situation; the word “were” is for a plural subject.
3. Each of the physicians (is/are) going to decide what to do.
I originally chose are.
“Is” is the correct choice because, as stated above, each of the physicians are singular; they are not
deciding what to do as a group.
J. Active Voice: In each pair, choose the version with an active verb by putting a check by it.
1. A. With five seconds left in the game, a time-out was called by one of the players.
B. With five seconds left in the game, one of the players called a time-out.
I originally chose A.
B would be the correct response because the subject is the thing doing the action and the thing
receiving the action is the object. A. uses passive verbs.
2. A. “The Yellow Wallpaper” was written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
B. Charlotte Perkins Gilman wrote “The Yellow Wallpaper”.
B would be the correct response because the subject is the thing doing the action and the thing
receiving the action is the object. A. uses passive verbs.
3. A. The major points of the lesson were quickly learned by the class.
B. The class quickly learned the major points of the lesson.
B would be the correct response because the subject is the thing doing the action and the thing
receiving the action is the object. A. uses passive verbs.
L. Usage: Circle the correct word in parentheses.
1. The strong emotion in the play (affected/effected) the students.
I originally chose effected.
Affected would be the correct response because affect is a verb meaning “to influence” and effect is a
noun.
