Paper Bag Book Talk
After reading The Devils Arithmetic you will be giving a short “paper bag
book talk” to the class.
On your brown paper lunch bag include:
Book title
Author
Pictures/designs that represent the theme of the book on the bottom of the bag
paste a description of your theme.
Inside your brown paper lunch bag include: 6-7 objects
6-7 items that are symbolic and/or relate to a part of the plot line of the
story. (Characters, setting, conflict, events in the rising action/falling, climax, resolution,
theme)
o Think outside the box.
o Each of the items included must represent a different part
of the plot.
Include an explanation of how each item relates to a
part of the plot. (One note card for each item.)
o Answer these questions in complete sentences:
What does the item symbolize?
Why did you choose it?
Support your reasons with points from the story.
One note card that includes information about the author.
o Include the following information in bullet points:
Name
Birth date/year
Titles of other books they have written (if any)
Anything else you find interesting

Guidelines for the book talk.
2-4 minutes
You will share the outside drawings and how it represents the theme of the story
Share the items with the class and explain why you chose them
and what they represent from the story. (You may use your note cards
to refer to.)
Share the information you found about the author
Rate your book on a 5 star scale with 1 being poor and 5 being
excellent. Tell the class why you rated it this way.
You will be graded on the following aspects:
• Including requirements on bag (title, author, picture/design)
• Including 6-7 meaningful items that symbolize parts of the plotline
• Completing note cards using complete sentences and neat
handwriting
• Completing the author note card using bullet points and neat handwriting
• Completing the book talk in 2-4minutes
• Using a quality voice so that all the audience can hear
• Sharing required elements (title, author, bag, items + support, and author
information)
• Rating your book with reasons why
