Science Study Guide – Chapter 10
Matter and Its Changes
A change of state does not affect an object’s mass.
When a liquid is cooled, its particles become closer together.
When water is boiled, it changes from a liquid to a gas.

Heat is applied to
hard plastic.
Plastic turns from solid
to liquid.
Imagine that there was no rain for two weeks and that it was very sunny.
How would this affect the water level in the local pond? The water level
would go down because heat from the Sun would evaporate the
water. When water evaporates, it changes into a gas and rises up
into the air.
Alloy is an example of steel.
A filter would help you remove sand from water.
Chocolate syrup in a glass of milk is a solution.

In what ways are evaporation and distillation different? In what ways are
they similar? Evaporation and distillation both change a liquid into a
gas. They are different because evaporation is a way of collecting
solids, and distillation is a way of collecting liquids.
If two elements are chemically combined, they lose their original
properties.
Two or more elements chemically combined are the best way in
describing a compound.
A chemical reaction must be used in order to separate chemicals in a
compound.
Iron is not a compound.
If your tongue feels like it is burning from eating a spicy pepper, drinking
milk will make the burning feeling stop. Why do you think this is? Pepper
juice is an acid and milk is a base. Drinking milk neutralizes the
pepper acid so it doesn’t burn.
