Deputy Head of Paintshop

Company Outline

Since Rocket Scenery Ltd was first launched in 1999, we have developed a reputation for high-quality, beautifully finished theatre scenery. Based near the city centre of Nottingham, our 2475 sq metres of workshops have seen the creation of sets for theatres up and down the UK and overseas.

Scenery is constructed in our metal shop and wood shop and then is passed on to the Paint department for finishing. The Paintshop comprises of a main space with a paint bridge and a satellite space next door for painting floors and other scenery as required.

Overall Job purpose

To support the Head of Paintshop in managing the scenic staff and paint shop to achieve the highest standards of quality, speed and economic efficiency.

To work on new sets created by our workshops and the refurbishments of other sets.

Work is predominantly based at Rocket Scenery main workshops, but you may also be required to work at other rented premises or on site at performance venues around the UK.

Role of Deputy Head of Paintshop:

Deputise for the Head of Paintshop in their absence or when directed by Head of Paintshop.

Scenic Painting

To work as a Scenic Painter.

To support the Head of Paintshop in realising artistic requirements using a wide variety of techniques, materials and finishes as appropriate.

To prepare samples to designer’s specification.

To endeavour to meet deadlines; always monitoring and ensuring the highest standards of craft work.

To provide regular information regarding the progress of work to the Head of Department and help report on scenic painting problems at the earliest possible stage.

To support the Head of Paintshop liaise with designers to satisfy their requirements consistent with

Rocket Scenery’s policies and resources.

To help ensure a positive and effective relationship with other departments, designers and production managers.

Staff Management

To support the Head of Paintshop to supervise and monitor staff to ensure the highest appropriate standards of work are maintained at all times.

To support the Head of Paintshop to build an effective and positive team providing support, supervision and encouraging staff to develop their skills. Carrying out induction and training as required.

Leading projects as required and with the Head of Paintshop ensure work is planned, scheduled and distributed as to meet required deadlines.

Ensure staff has up-to-date information regarding quality, efficiency, materials, equipment and progress of their work.

Ensure health and safety and correct working methods in the workplace (meeting COSHH standards) are adhered to.

Administration

To attend regular meetings to schedule tasks and to develop work plans for productions.

In the absence of the Head of Paintshop estimate the number of hours required in painting a show and the cost of materials.

Assist in the ordering of appropriate materials in time and within budget.

Ensure that the Paintshop is secured, maintained and adequately equipped.

Report on repairs as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The skills required are varied. Essential skills for this role are:

Experience

Significant Scenic Art experience of working on medium and large scale theatre productions.

Experience of staff management within a workshop environment.

Excellent knowledge of scenic artistry using a wide variety of techniques.

Scenic Art Skills

Ability to work from scale drawings, models, plans, sketches, verbal ideas and references.

Ability to interpret from scale design to the larger set.

Awareness of textures using various materials and ability to use colour to exacting standards.

Experience of stretching and hanging cloths and gauzes and creating cut cloths.

HS 19.1.16

Personal aptitudes

Able to work within a team but also work on own initiative and carry out delegated projects with a minimum amount of supervision.

Able to work under pressure and multi-task: working on more than one production at a time.

Good interpersonal and communication skills with a positive and flexible approach.

Excellent personal time management.

Desirable skills

Having completed a degree or similar in Scenic Arts.

Experience of costing and budgeting within a Scenic Art department.

Basic Computer skills.

Clean Driving Licence.

Job Requirements:

Physically capable of undertaking the requirements of the position including bending, stretching and reaching for long periods of time. Also working at height on ladders, access platforms and paint bridge.

 Flexibility regarding hours of work: basic hours of this position are 38 hours a week but working overtime in evenings and weekends, on site or away, is also required to ensure that the scenery is completed on time.
