Dear Parents and Carers
YEAR 10 GCSE ENGLISH LITERATURE
I am writing to let you know that we will soon purchase the text books your daughter will study for
her English Literature examination.
Students will need two texts only; one play and one novel. We will shortly begin to study the novel
component of the course and your daughter will study either Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen,
The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson or A Christmas Carol by
Charles Dickens. Your daughter’s English teacher will let her know which text she will be studying.
These texts will be provided in class. However, if your daughter wishes to annotate them, and we
strongly advise this as examination preparation, she will need to pay for them. As you will
appreciate, once the books have been written in, they are unusable for other students; we often
find that students are proud to keep their annotated copies as reminders of their hard work.
We will be using the English and Media Centre editions of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde
and A Christmas Carol, which include the full version of the text together with extremely helpful
study guides and activities on each of the chapters. These are available to purchase from school
at the discounted price of £8.00 each.
The Strange Case of Dr
Jekyll
ISBN: 9781906101374
A Christmas Carol
ISBN: 9781906101381
Students studying Pride and Prejudice will use the Penguin Classics version but we also recommend
they purchase the CGP Text Study Guide, which provides notes on the context of the novel, the
plot and the characters and includes exam style questions. Both these books are also available to
purchase from school as a set at the discounted price of £8.00.
Jane Eyre
ISBN: 9780141439518
CGP GCSE English Text
Guide - Pride and Prejudice
ISBN: 978-1847624857
If you wish to purchase these texts yourself, please make sure that you buy the above editions only
(the ISBN numbers have been given as a reference). It is extremely difficult for students to use
different versions of the same text in the classroom. Any texts borrowed by students must be
returned as clean copies after the exam or students will be charged for replacements
If you would like to order the texts from school, you need to make your payment online. Please go
to www.parentpay.com and enter in your username and password then choose the service called
GCSE English Books 2015 and make your payment. You will only be able to purchase the text being
studied by your daughter. If you have any problems using ParentPay, please contact Mrs Mordan
on 01372 720439 extension 242 or at tmordan@rosebery.surrey.sch.uk. If you have any questions
regarding the texts, please contact your daughter’s English teacher. Please make your payment
by Friday 9 October, after which the service will close.
Yours sincerely
T.Allen
