Mathematics Graduate Trainee Teacher
Salary up to £24,670 pa
Halesowen College is committed to supporting the national agenda to drive up standards for
mathematics, increasing individual employability skills and the quality of the workforce. The
Graduate Trainee Teacher programme is an ideal opportunity for those who want to
undertake a formal and recognised teacher training qualification whilst working within a
Further Education setting. This programme will ideally suit people who enjoy learning
themselves and like to help others learn and have recently achieved a good honours degree
in mathematics, or other subjects with a high proportion of maths content and are
considering a career in teaching.
The programme offers graduates the opportunity to spend time working directly with
students and existing teaching and support staff to gain hands on experience in our college.
The programme is designed to help graduates with a passion for mathematics, and an
interest and curiosity about the teaching of mathematics in further education. You will be an
enthusiastic individual who has a desire to teach, motivate students and contribute to
delivering high standards of teaching and learning.
The programme will be structured across two full academic years and will include a blend of
work shadowing, teaching observations, team teaching and individual teaching. You will be
assigned a mentor, who is an experienced mathematics lecturer, to support your
development throughout the programme and your initial teacher training qualification. During
your time on the programme you will be supported to become a fully qualified teacher via
attainment of the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training which is delivered in partnership
with the University of Worcester at our Whittingham Road campus.
To be eligible to apply for a place on the programme, you must hold (or be predicted to
achieve in the summer of 2015) a degree in mathematics or another subject with a high
maths content e.g. Engineering, have a genuine passion for mathematics, and interest in
developing a career in teaching in FE, and be able to commit to the programme for a the
minimum two year duration and demonstrate a passion to develop the Maths skills of our
learners. For exceptional candidates there will be the opportunity to undertake the
programme over one academic year following a fast track route.
The government are also funding Golden Hello payments of £7,500 for mathematic
graduates who take teaching mathematics in FE as a career path. This would be payable on
completion of your teacher training qualifications and meeting other eligibility criteria as
defined by the Education and Training Foundation.
