If you are not participating go along to the SHOWCASE conference and learn about the exciting research being conducted by thesis students at UC, Lincoln and the

Christchurch School of Medicine, University of Otago

If you are employed by UC – for example, as a TA, tutor, lab demonstrator, SOAR advisor, research assistant, assistant at disability support – then go along to the U35 mixer event

There are still some scholarships with closing dates for applications due before the end of the year – have a look through and see which you can apply for….remember that you have to be in to win!

SHOWCASE

More than 50 thesis students will be presenting their research at the SHOWCASE conference on Thursday November 19 th

. Presentations are from students at UC, Lincoln University and from the Otago University Christchurch School of Medicine.

The event is taking place in lecture theatres A4, A5 and A6 between 9am and 5:15pm – followed by prize giving. Please come along and hear about the great research being conducted by thesis students!

U35 Mixer – Thursday 12

November 2015

The youth reps (Lucy-Jane Walsh; Lynsey Talagi; Keir Lesli) on the University of

Canterbury TEU (Tertiary Education Union) branch committee are hosting a mixer event for young university staff on Thursday, November 12 th

, 5pm-7pm at the Shilling Club . All university staff under 35 are welcome to attend: please come along and enjoy good company, a free drink and pizza on us!

This includes PG students who also work at the university during their studies – for example as teaching or research assistants.

SOAR (Support, Opportunity, Advice, Resources) PEER ADVISORS

The advisors are senior PhD candidates from across campus and each can offer support on a variety of different topics related to doctoral study. For further information and to book an appointment click here . I encourage doctoral students to use this free service to get additional support and advice related to your studies!!

The sessions will be held in the Thesis Student House (39A Creyke Road).

Areas in which assistance is offered:

 Quantitative data analysis (Excel; SPSS; R)

 Qualitative data analysis (NVivo; narrative analysis; observational fieldwork; grounded theory; content analysis; case studies)

 Preparing and delivering research presentations

 Completing ethics applications

 Referencing (Endnote; Mendeley)

 Managing the student-supervisor relationship

 Adapting to a new academic culture as a doctoral student (especially useful for

 international students)

 Mentoring and support for thesis students
