REQUIRED MATERIALS FOR THIS COURSE
Text: “Speaking with a Purpose” by Arthur Koch – 7th ed.
**Daily access to a computer with Internet capability
**Access to a video camera for VHS, a Video CAM or an optical camera to visually record
your speeches on to a CD-R or DVD-R or an SDChip (SANS Disc) or a jump drive.
**Students must have a valid mailing address, email address, and phone number.
** If these items are NOT accessible to you on a daily basis, it will be difficult for you
to pass this online course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To aid the students in overcoming speech anxiety.
2. To provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of Public Speaking including
theory, nonverbal communication, and ethics.
3. To provide students with techniques for developing effective listening skills, verbal
communication skills and delivery skills including the use of visual aids.
4. To provide students with the ability to apply the conceptual ideas of public speaking
to practical situations outside the classroom.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS

3.**Students must submit a valid home, email address and phone number by Monday, Jan., 12,
2009 (or 3 days from the date you were added to the course roster).
4. Student participation is MANDATORY. Students are required to post and respond to
peers and instructor on the discussion board as directed.
5. Students are required to give three (3) informal speeches and two (2) formal speeches.
Informal speeches include: a self-introductory speech (written), student introduction
Speech (written) and an impromptu speech (a question/answer period at the end of your
persuasive speech. Formal speeches include: an informative speech with visual aids, and a
persuasive speech with visual aids.
COURSE POLICIES:
If a valid address (where you will receive your VHS, cd, dvd, SD chip or jump drive), email
address (where you check your email on a regular basis), and phone number are NOT
received by 11:55 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12, (or by the third day from the date you were added
to the course roster) there will be a 5 point deduction for every day that you are late thereafter.
Plagiarism: Plagiarism is a very serious issue in this course. If you plagiarize, you will be given an
“F” for the course.
Unaccepted tapes/DVDs: Please DO NOT send 8MM tapes - Sony mini DVD’s – I HAVE NO WAY
TO VIEW THEM!!!!! Also, DO NOT Record onto a DVD-RW or a CD-RW. If you send any of the
above, your speech will not be graded. All speeches must be transferred to VHS, CD-R,
DVD-R, SD chip, or jump drive before submitting. Speeches may also be submitted by email
(provided you already have the knowledge for emailing your speech). I will accept speeches that are
posted to YouTube.
Late Assignments:
ALL ASSIGNMENTS, SPEECHES, and QUIZZES ARE DUE ON THE DATE AND TIME LISTED
BELOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE AND TIME UNLESS
AUTHORIZED BY THE INSTRUCTOR. NO EXCEPTIONS!!! Sometimes, during the quizzes or
exams, Blackboard or your ISP does time out. If this occurs, please email me ASAP. Blackboard
does show the attempt, so if you’re late and thinking this will get the quiz reopened for you, it’s not
going to happen.
Daily work:
You must post some useful information at least 5 days in a week (Sat – Friday). It might be in
response to a discussion posted on the General Discussion Board or posting of an assignment. Be
aware that Blackboard tracks each time you log in, so there’s no mistaking when & where you’ve
been. If you miss more than 10 days of being on the boards (within this quarter), your grade will be
reduced one (1) complete letter grade at the end (unless otherwise approved by the instructor).
Incompletes: No incompletes will be given for this course.

In the past, many students have neglected to complete Block 6 for whatever reasons.
However, Block 6 is a part of the coursework just like any other block. If you do not take your
Final Exam, you will be missing the 50 points possible.
