11. Aims of the Programme
The aim of this programme is for registered practitioners (ie Nurses, Midwives, Community Public
Health Nurses) currently working in a sexual health related area, who have successfully completed
MW2127 (Developing Skills in Contraception and Reproductive Sexual Health Care) or equivalent to
achieve knowledge and clinical competence in asymptomatic screening for sexually transmitted
infections and HIV. It is anticipated that upon successful completion of this course that practitioners
will be dual trained in both contraception and asymptomatic screening for STI’s and HIV, utilising
transferable skills to provide holistic client care for working within an integrated sexual health service.

A. Knowledge and Understanding
A1. Apply and critically discuss the relevance of anatomy, physiology and pathology to sexual health
practice
A2. Critically evaluate evidence based guidelines in the management of clients accessing
asymptomatic screening for STI and HIV screening within clinical practice.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lecture, group work, tutorials, case studies, reflection, audio visual technology, self directed study,
use of e-learn.
Assessment methods
Clinical assessment, Objective Structured Clinical Skills Examination (OSCE’s).
B. Subject-specific skills
B1. Undertake asymptomatic sexual health screening for STI’s and HIV in male and female patients.
Teaching and Learning Methods
Lecture, group work, tutorials, case studies, reflection, audio visual technology, self directed study,
use of e-learn, practical equipment and demonstration in the classroom, experience within in clinical
learning environment.

Clinical assessment, Objective Structured Clinical Skills Examination (OSCE’s).

15. Personal Development Planning
Personal development plans for each student will be developed as part of ongoing learning in order to
achieve the learning objectives of the course. Students are supported in the process of individual
reflection upon their own performance and/or achievements and to plan for their personal, educational
and career development. This is achieved through the teaching and learning strategy and includes
utilising personal tutorial support and academic advice.
16. Admissions criteria
Programme Specifications include minimum entry requirements, including academic qualifications,
together with appropriate experience and skills required for entry to study. These criteria may be
expressed as a range rather than a specific grade. Amendments to entry requirements may have

Students will be informed of their personal minimum entry criteria in their offer letter.
First level Nurse, Midwife or Community Public Health Nurses with current registration on the Nursing
and Midwifery Professional Register.
Prior successful completion of MW2127 (Developing Skills in Contraception and Reproductive Sexual
Health Care) or equivalent contraceptive programme.
Ability to study at Level 3.
