SURGE PROTECTION DEVICES

SURGE PROTECTION DEVICES
TRANSIENT SURGES ARE CAUSED MAINLY BY LIGHTNING, SWITCHING AND ELECTRICAL FAULTS. The Secondary effect of
lightning causes transient over voltages which damages sensitive electrical and Electronic equipments installed
Indoor/Outdoor. The commonly used protective devices like HRC Fuses, MCBs, ELCBs etc. are current sensing devices
and they sense /operate in a few milli seconds. Since the surge is a Transient over voltage which occurs for few
microseconds, these devices cannot sense them.
Hence, Indian and International Standards recommend installation of Surge Protection Devices. The SPDs are to be
installed in addition to the UPS to protect the sensitive electrical and electronic equipments. In fact, the IEC and IEEE
standards have made it mandatory that, wherever external lightning protection is provided, Surge Protection Devices also
shall be installed. The function of a surge protection device is to sense and limit the transient over voltages to levels
which the connected equipment can withstand safely.
The surge protection is required to be provided for POWER,SIGNAL ,ETHERNET and TELECOM lines.
POWER LINES
SPDs for Power lines are available for DC, AC, Single phase and Three phase applications. International Standards
recommend graded protection for power Lines. i.e different types of SPDs shall be provided at various levels of the power
system namely, the Main switchboard, sub switchboard, distribution board and near the equipment etc,. To make the
protection simple & effective we are offering four types of SPDs for Power Lines which meet the requirements of the
international standards.
Type I (Class B) –High performance spark gap type SPD for Installation at the Main switch board in
monoblock format.

CPT – MSPD –A Multi element combined protector :
JEF CPT MSPD Is designed for installation at SSB or DB level. This offers combined (Class I & II ) protection. Since
these surge protection devices are generally connected parallel to the power circuit, they are independent of
load current.
Complies with the performance requirements of IEC 61643-11. Each Surge arrester (which is provided between
phase to earth or phase to neutral and neutral to earth) has 3 elements, out of which, when one element
disconnects, its’ status indicator flag turns red, gets automatically disconnected and the balance elements are in
service. Remote indication about the status of the element can also be

* Multiple levels of Redundancy
The MSPD is recommended for every office, factory wherever Computers, CNC machines, sophisticated
electronics systems and drives are deployed.
JEF CPT MSPD REGULAR
The Regular model offers common mode protection, where the configuration is between each phase to earth and
neutral to earth.
JEF CPT MSPD ALL MODE
Model offers common and differential Protection. Between each phase to neutral, each phase to earth and
between neutral to earth. Hence, this model is highly recommended for installation at the main incomer even at
remote areas where periodical maintenance is difficult. Because of its’ ability to handle higher surge currents &
built redundancy, it has longer life.
SPD for Telephone Lines
All the equipments connected to any type of telephone lines, whether RTC, ADSL, PP or RDSI
must be protected due to the fact that they are very sensitive with very low surge withstand
capacity. Operating voltage of this kind of lines do not normally exceed one hundred volts.
Many installations include data transmission equipment such as modems, telecom switches,
etc. We offer a wide range of protector for telephone and internet lines, including protectors
in different formats : DIN rail, Aerial , Krone and 19” rack.
Protected equipments : EPABX, Modems, Computers, Routers, Telecom Switches
SPDS for Data Networks The increased use of computers as a management tool and the
information stored on these equipments makes the Ethernet a critical part of an installation.
The computers are highly sensitive to transient overvoltages. In addition to the cost of
replacing the damaged equipment, there is also the loss of data, which in many cases, can
be of an incalculable value.
* Ethernet UTP CAT 6 & Cat 5E and POE
* 19” Rack protector upto 24 ports
* Connections by IDC and RJ 45 connectors
Protected equipment : Computers, Servers, Network Switches
SPD for Radio Frequency
The RF signal receiver or transmitter generally located at High elevations are normally
prone to atmospheric surges and needs protection. Our CT10 range of products, based on
GDT technology are designed to protect equipments connected to RF signals such as
cameras, receivers, satellite TV or CCTV equipment.
SPD for Load Cell Specially designed to protect load cells, weighbridge, 3 and 4 wire RTD sensors, strain gauge
sensors, and the measuring instrument of the weighbridge against surges and transients.
Provides all mode protection in a waterproof enclosure for harsh environment with failsafe design.
