Forensic psychiatry in Norway
The curative part of forensic psychiatry in Norway is arranged as a part of the health
care system within usual psychiatric clinics. Diagnosis and treatment is provided within
psychiatric wards, both forensic and general psychiatric wards, and also within
policlinics in prisons or usual psychiatric policlinics.
Psychiatric evaluations for judicial purposes are provided by private psychiatrists and
psychologists working independently for the courts who engage these specialists. For
difficult cases it is possible to do psychiatric evaluations while the person is admitted to
psychiatric ward. It is mandatory to send all psychiatric evaluations intended for use
within the judicial system to The Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine. This organ
provides qualitative control and must accept the evaluations before they can be used in
the judicial system.
Training in forensic psychiatry in Norway is mainly organized by courses provided by
the regional competence centres, The Norwegian Courts Administration, The Norwegian
Psychiatric Association and The Norwegian Psychological Association.
