PETITION in support of:
A Ban on Plastic Bags
To the President and members of the Legislative Council New South Wales Parliament.
This petition of certain citizens of New South Wales states that:
Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year and around 10 million new bags
every day. An estimated 3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic are
disposed of in landfill sites throughout Australia every year.
It is estimated that around 50 million bags enter the Australian litter stream every
year, causing significant environmental damage and risks to our native fauna.
Only a ban on single use plastic bags at retail outlets can curb the number of
plastic bags.
The undersigned petitioners request that the NSW Government introduce a ban on single
use plastic bags at retail points of sale.
