OBJECTIVES: The overall goal for Voice II is to prepare students so to be able to begin voice lessons
and/or a choral ensemble. Students will continue to improve their singing technique with the goal of
presenting a solo for the class at the end of the semester. Students will also become familiar with basic
music fundamentals such as basic music notation, beginning sight reading and ear training. Students will
also gain knowledge of basic song genres. By the end of the course, students should be able to learn a
song using proper breath support, good tone quality, proper enunciation of diction, proper stage
deportment and a acquire good habits of vocal health.

CLASS REQUIRMENTS:
1. Students are required to attend all classes. A daily grade will be recorded. Classroom
participation is vital for student progress throughout the semester.
2. Students will be assigned various vocal exercises throughout the course. These assignments are
to be performed outside of class.
3. Students are expected to practice at least 20 minutes daily, 5 out of 7 days a week.
4. Students will be assigned various songs from the required text and class handouts.
5. A notebook/folder is required for additional materials that will be assigned as needed by the
instructor.
6. Individual assessments will be given throughout the semester on posted dates as assigned by
the instructor.
7. Students are required to attend 2 concerts that include proper singing. Reports will be required.
8. Additional assignments will be given in the areas of music fundamentals, sight singing/reading
and ear training.
9. Students will sing a solo voice piece for the class as the end of the semester. This will be the
Final Exam for the course. Failure to participate on the Final Exam will result in a Final Exam
Grade of 0….

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT:
1. Students are expected to attend class on time. Students are expected to stay in the class for the
complete duration of the posted period unless directed otherwise by the instructor.
2. Students are not allowed to eat during class.
3. Students can only bring water for drinking during class. Water must be in a closed container.
4. No phones, Ipods, computers or tablets will be allowed in class. Phones must be placed on
silent mode for duration class.
5. Students who are habitually late (more than 2x/semester) will earn a daily grade of “0” for each
day of tardiness.
6. Absences: students will be allowed to make up 1 (one) required assessment. This make up day
will be posted by the professor. There will be no other make up assessments. Students who fail
to perform for the Final Exam will be issued a grade of “0”. Students deemed too ill to attend
the Final or have a declared family emergency must contact the instructor. A grade of
“I(Incomplete) will be recorded at the Registrar’s Office. It is the responsibility of the student to
contact the instructor after the semester ends to schedule any remaining work.
7. It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw from class if one assesses that they may not be
able to complete the course assignments.
About Ms. Hines: Mary Hines, Instructor of Voice and Music Literature, has been singing professionally
for over 30 years. She has performed various genres of music, including opera, oratorio, concert
repertoire, chamber music, recitals, and church music. She has been teaching college level voice for
over 24 years. Ms. Hines is a member of NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing), TMEA
(Texas Music Educators Association), and is a former Founding Board Member for the Bay Area Youth
Singers (BAYS). She is a former member of the Touring Roster for the Texas Commission for the Arts. In
her other life she is a mom of 2 busy girls, a Girl Scout Leader, a runner, sailor, coffee drinker,
backpacker and recently earned her Lifeguard Certification.
