Anaesthetic Fellowship in Head and Neck Anaesthesia
Northwick Park Hospital
6 Month Posts – 2 available (6 months each) – starting May and November 2014
Post Supervisors: Drs Vaughan, Morris and Rope
Applications are welcome from Imperial trainees who are ST5 and above for the airway/head
and neck fellowship at Northwick Park hospital. This post is only open to Imperial anaesthetic
trainees. It is an ‘in scheme’ post so application /funding for OOPE is not necessary.
This post will provide extensive exposure to all areas of ENT, maxillofacial and head and
neck cancer surgery. This includes laryngopharyngectomy, craniofacial resection and
reconstruction, tracheal resection, free flap reconstruction, intrathoracic goitre surgery, voice
surgery, and the full range of routine rhinology, otology and oromaxillofacial surgery. The
unit has 8 ENT and 12 maxillofacial surgeons, as well as associated plastics teams.
The post will also include full training in advanced airway management techniques. At the
end of the fellowship the post holder will be competent at awake and asleep fibreoptic
intubation, videolaryngoscopy and rigid and flexible bronchoscopy. In addition skills in
transtracheal, supra and infraglottic jet ventilation, retrograde intubation and percutaneous
tracheostomy will be gained.
Research
The post holder will be expected to participate in and initiate research and audit, and see this
through to presentation and publication. Our unit also actively collaborates in the pan London
Head and neck research group HANA.
Teaching
The post holder will assist with training in airway management for more junior team
members, and with teaching to medical and paramedical staff outside the department on an ad
hoc basis.
Other Clinical Duties
The post holder will participate in the senior ST rota with its attendant duties.

The research element of this post will entail self directed work, sometimes to strict deadlines.
There is a great degree of flexibility in the post to fit the needs and wishes of the fellow, their
interests and research project. This will be a six month period of hard work, but the more you
put in, the more you are likely to get out!
