SAFETY DATA SHEETS
INHALATION – If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical
attention immediately
SKIN – Flush with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes. Get medical attention. Wash
contaminated clothing before reuse.
EYES – Immediately flush eyes with water for 15 minutes. Get medical
attention.
INGESTION – Do not induce vomiting. Immediately give large
quantities of water. Get medical attention immediately.
ADVICE TO PHYSICIAN: Sodium Nitrite forms methemoglobin in the
blood stream. Treat accordingly.
5) Fire-fighting measures
a) Suitable (and unsuitable) extinguishing media
i)
Use flooding amounts of water. Carbon dioxide may also be used. Do not
use ammonium phosphate dry chemical.
b) Specific hazards arising from the chemical (e.g. nature of any hazardous combustion
products)
i)
No information available
ii)
If evaporated to dryness, residue is an oxidizer and can stimulate or
accelerate combustion of organic or other combustible materials
c) Special protective equipment and precautions for fire-fighters.
i)
Wear NIOSH-approved self-contained breathing apparatus as nitrogen
oxides may be present. Control or eliminate water run-off to sewers and
waterways if it contains this material.
6) Accidental release measures
a) Methods and materials for containment and cleanup.
i)
Small spills: Cover with inert absorbent such as clay and shovel into clean
container.
ii)
Large spills: Dike area with inert absorbent and mop or pump into clean
containers. Keep out of sewers and waterways. Avoid contact with
incompatible materials.

SAFETY DATA SHEETS
Disposal of wastes from cleanup operation should be carried out in
accordance to guidelines outlined in Section 13.
7) Handling and Storage
i)
Handling: Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Keep away from
combustible materials. Follow good housekeeping and personal hygiene
practices.
ii)
Storage: Protect from physical damage. Store in a warm place, away from
combustible materials and wooden floors. Keep containers tightly closed.
Diking of storage tanks is recommended.
8) Exposure controls/personal protection
a) Appropriate Engineering Controls
i)
Local exhaust if misty conditions prevail. Keep incompatible materials out
of hoods, ducts, etc.

Skin Protection – For routine product handling or use, wear impervious
apron and gloves and full work clothing, including long sleeved shirt and
trousers. For prolonged or repeated contact, wear full impervious clothing.
iii)
Respiratory Protection – Use a NIOSH approved respirator for solution
mists. Some conditions may require NIOSH approved self-contained
breathing apparatus or an air supplied respirator.

SAFETY DATA SHEETS
Conditions to Avoid: Avoid heat, especially heating to dryness, which
increase the probability of oxidizing reactions. Product slowly oxidizes to
sodium nitrate when exposed to air
Incompatible Products: Avoid reducing agent and acids
Hazardous Decomposition Products: If evaporated, the residue is a
dangerous fire risk, when heated to 1,000 degrees F. On heating the
residue is also likely to yield toxic brown fumes of nitrogen oxides, which
are corrosive and oxidizing.
Possibility of Hazardous Reactions: Will not occur
