Creative Response – The American and French Revolutions
As your assessment you will be graded on your understanding of the pages read in World
History, your own research and from the two documentaries we saw in class. In your answer
you need to answer the Guiding Question: ‘Why do we rebel?’
For the American Revolution, see pages 640-645, for the French Revolution see pages 651-661.

Choose ONE of the following assessment tasks.
1. Write a newspaper article from the day when the American Revolution begins in
Lexington, Massachusetts. This could be a British or American revolutionary
newspaper. Include relevant details and background information. Answer the guiding
question (Maximum 400 words)
2. (Pair) Create a board game showing the major events of either the American or French
revolution, and the events that caused it. The game should highlight the most
important decisions and moments in these revolutions. Answer the guiding question.
(200-300 words total) You will be interviewed by the teacher for your grade.
3. Write a script of part of the first Continental Congress, showing different points of
view about the possibility of a revolution. Include relevant details and background
information. Answer the guiding question (Maximum 400 words)
4. Through your own research and class materials, make a video showing the impact the
American and French revolutions have had on the world today. Answer the guiding
question. (around 2 minutes).
5. Write a letter from Maria Antoinette OR Louis XVI on the day of Louis’ execution, to
the family in Austria. Explain briefly what has happened and why, and explain how you
feel about the French Revolution. Answer the guiding question. (Maximum 400
words.)
6. Write a newspaper article from an important moment in the French Revolution. This
could be a newspaper in France or England, and it could be in favour of the revolution
or against it. You should include relevant details and background information. Answer
the guiding question. (Maximum 400 words.)
7. Imagine you are Louis XVI and you are about to be executed. You are standing next to
the guillotine, and you wish to make a speech to the crowd (in real life he did make a
speech, but no-one could hear it because of the drummers). Record your speech with
a video camera (or your cellphone if it is compatible with the computer) and save it to
my computer to be graded. You should include relevant details and background
information. Answer the guiding question. (Maximum 400 words)
8. (Pair) Imagine you are Louis XVI and Maria Antoinette. Roleplay their last conversation
before Louis is executed. You should include relevant details and background
information. You must be ready to perform for the class or save the recording to my
computer. Answer the guiding question. (Maximum 2 minutes)
