A Christmas Carol Review
A Christmas Carol isn’t just simply a carol. It’s a classic book that sends out an
important message to all. The theme of this story is ‘Look back at your past mistakes so
they can’t be repeated.’ Something in the past could possibly lead to the answers that
you seek in the future ahead. On page 55 of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge says, “…and I
learned a lesson which is working now. To-night, if you have aught to teach me, let me
profit by it.” He means that he learned about his past mistakes and what he missed out
on. Scrooge learned about how he was back then compared to how he is now. So
Scrooge is actually willing to learn what the Ghost of Christmas Present wants him to
know. In Stave 1, page 50, Scrooge tells the Ghost of Christmas Past, “Leave me! Take
me back! Haunt me no more!” Scrooge had seen enough of his past that he just regrets
it all. He missed out on a life with his fiancée, Belle, because he loved money much more
than he loved her. Scrooge even re-thought about how he treats his employees
compared to how Mr. Fezziwig treats his. Also on page 81, the Ghost of Christmas
Present says to Scrooge, “This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware of them both,
and all their degree, but most of all beware this boy…” The Ghost of Christmas Present
knew that Scrooge was quite ignorant of most things, except for money. He wanted
Scrooge to get rid of his ignorance, and acknowledge what he’s ignoring. These events in
the story fit in with the theme of A Christmas Carol. Scrooge saw his past mistakes and
he wanted to fix them to prevent a dreaded future that he forged for.
The theme of A Christmas Carol reflects off the Victorian Era and our world
today. First of all, it reflects the Upper, Middle, and Lower Classes. Each of the classes
acted and treated each other in different ways. The Middle and Lower Classes were
always against each other. In fact, the Upper Class couldn’t care less about the other
classes. During the Victorian Era, many people were in the Lower Class or Middle Class.
Scrooge was in the Upper Class, and he didn’t even care about anything except money.
Bob Cratchit and his family were in the Middle Class, but they were on the verge of
entering the Lower Class. Then when Scrooge looked back at his past, he saw what he
did wrong. Then he changed his ways, and the Cratchit family stayed in the Middle Class.
A Christmas Carol reflects on our world today as well. Currently, our U.S. government is
falling down. The economy is getting worse and worse, it could lead to another Great
Depression. Due to some of our major mistakes made a while ago, our economy fell.
History is starting to repeat itself because of this. That’s not a good thing at all. Just
because something happened a while ago, doesn’t mean that it won’t happen again.
Our generation today can reflect off A Christmas Carol’s theme to repair the past
mistakes.
A Christmas Carol is a classic and is still enjoyed even today. It tells a tale about
how one greedy old man takes a journey with 3 spirits, to change his ways. This story
has been around for a long time. It changed how Christmas was celebrated. Charles
Dickens has been called ‘The Man Who Discovered Christmas’ after his book was
published. A Christmas Carol sends out an important message that relates to every
single one of us. The theme was ‘Look back at your past mistakes so they can’t be
repeated.’ Scrooge was a snobby and greedy old man that had a dreadful future
awaiting him. He didn’t want that to happen, so he had to change his ways if he wants a
better future. This story’s theme reflects off the Victorian Era and our modern world
today. A Christmas Carol is a story that is still enjoyed today, that’s why it’s considered a
classic novel.
Reflection:
One thing I like about this piece: I love the fact that we got to review A Christmas Carol
during the holiday season. It fits perfectly with the season we are in.
One thing that my family and friends would like about this piece: They would like that
my review is short and easy to read.
One thing I need to change: I just need to change how I word some things. It may seem
easy for me to understand, but for others it could be confusing.
One thing my teacher would notice about my writing: Sometimes I like to describe a few
things with only 1 or 2 adjective words.
